Hi all,

I propose we set a date for a public beta release soon, so that we can
have a final version before the end of September.

I propose we change the name of the beta to 1.2b rather than 1.2.0b
(this was due to a mistake on my part when the current version was
labelled 1.1.0 instead of 1.1 or perhaps even 1).

I am going to try to do some clean up and documentation, but I don't
have any code changes waiting. I would be OK with a beta release on
August 19. What about you Bert? What time frame would suit you?

Best,
Joel

19 August is OK for me too!

Joel, you say that you would like to have a final version before the end
of September. I suppose this means that the newly added embossers should
be tested by that time?

Bert

PS: there are a whole lot of classes I've been working on that don't
have any license information yet. Are you going to add that or should I?

Great!

Let's aim for a beta release on August 19 then!

Ideally, all embossers should be tested. However, I know that this can be difficult. I will update Easy Embossing Utility with the beta version of Braille Utils, publish this on Google code and ask everyone I can think of to test it, but I can only cover a small number of embossers that way. I hope you can do the same with Odt2braille users. But perhaps the end of September is too soon? I think that it is more important to have the release properly tested than it is to keep that deadline. It would be a bit nice to have it in time for Braille21, but if you think you need more time, that's completely fine by me. In that case we could ask the Braille21 attendees to test the beta of Braille Utils using either Odt2braille, Easy Embossing Utility or the command line UI.

You are very welcome to add the license information, but I can do it too. If you prefer I do it, just let me know when you're done implementing.

Best,
Joel

Yes perhaps it is too soon, we'll see how it goes.

I mentioned the testing because we have to think this through. The fact that we don't have most of these embossers at our disposal is a bit problematic. Other people have to do the actual testing somehow, and the communication can be difficult. How should people perform the tests? How should they communicate the results back to us? How do we make modified versions available (if necessary)? Etc. This whole process should be as smooth as possible.

For the tests I did so far, I let people use odt2braille, but I have seen that installing new versions is somewhat cumbersome if many modifications have to be made. Maybe your Easy Embossing Utility is more adequate for testing because it is smaller and installing new versions is easier (only replace 1 jar).

I agree that testing is something we need to think about. I don't have
any answers to your questions right now. We could definitely use the
Easy Embossing Utility for testing, but maybe you should have a look
first, because some of the embosser features you have implemented may
have to be added to the user interface. I will get back to you when I
have a version of EEU using a current build of BrailleUtils available.

Best,
Joel

That would be very great. A beta release could be integrated into Debian
unstable and updating later shouldn't be a problem. So I'm fine with the
proposed date.

Regarding tests of embossers: which models need to be tested? I at least know
one organisation which owns two embossers and I guess if one of these is one of
the new supported, the people there would be willing to test.

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Every contribution is welcome! Do you know what embosser models they have? As Bert pointed out, we need to organize the testing somehow. As a starting point I have created this form:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEgyRWZpbFFlejQ1LUotS2pOVmhRaHc6MQ

Maybe we need more fields? Otherwise, we can start asking the people we know to fill it out.

Best,
Joel

I mailed them the link and I'll see which information I can get.

I think it looks quite ok.
