(Note: Instances of the word "perfect" used in this discussion should
not be taken as the literal, denotative-definition of the word. I'm
using it "conversationally" and "generally" to make a point. I don't
want to get into a semantics-debate here or a theoretical-exploration
of the definitions or "meaning/s" of "perfect." That's for some other
philosophical-group, not this.)

In a "perfect world," all information would be free, open and
available to anyone. However, a "perfect world" would probably lack
starvation, murder, rape and many other nasty, nasty things. This
world is far-from-perfect, and unfortunately for me, and this group,
that means that "certain" restrictions are going to have to exist.

Google Groups isn't perfect, either. I'd like to share the "pages" and
leave the discussions as "private" (members only), but that's not
possible. That means that there are secrets that I'd like to share
(and some by, I'm sure, other, select members) that unfortunately
can't reveal nor reference here.

I'm looking into other CMS/wiki-type information-management services
to circumvent this... atm I'm leaning-toward Backpack by 37signals
because of it's other GTD-benefits. As a group, the costs of the
secured, "better" features can be split-across the group's entirety,
minimizing per-person costs (and making the service less-expensive
than if individually-purchased).

I encourage everyone to sign-up for a free-account (or at least check-
out the site's videos and features) because regardless of your level
of contribution or involvement in this or other "groups," Backpack is
a great service. I have my own paid-plan, and will use the group's-
Backpack only for "group posts" and content. The pages, space and
features are a value-add, something for the benefit of the group, not
me-personally.

If you know of good CMS software and forum tools, by all-means, please
voice your opinion. I'd like to, if at all possible, stay on a
technological "cutting-edge," that in-itself can be used as a
"marketing tool," spreading the domain and idea across the "web-tech"
communities.

I've used http://www.pbwiki.com for my own collaborative project (has
features you described - privacy filtering, collaboration/wiki style
community contribution, etc.)

What is the primary attributes you are looking for in a system?

Deki Wiki > Wikidot > pbwiki
imo and according to the Twitter community.

Private messaging would be nice, but Backpack fulfills a lot of what
we need.
