Typing tutor is available both in Setup and Portable versions. If you plan to work with RapidTyping only on your local PC, choose Setup version. But if you want to use it from your flash drive or any external device while on the go, Portable version is exactly what you need. In the classroom you can use both version at your choice.
The main plus is it has a nice minimalist UI where it shows my progress pretty clearly. The main minus is there's no way to open a text file and automatically start tutorial using it. I think it would be pretty easy to script that kind of addition.
If you don't mind online flash games, I find Typer Shark to be pretty enjoyable. It's best if you've already done typing tutorials "properly" to give you an idea of what you should be doing, but is a very good way to practice.
While using games to improve typing for the kids may be a good idea, I still feel that you shouldn't neglect the basics. There are a number of typing tutors for Linux. A couple of really good ones include TIPP10 and KTouch

Hi. Mavis Beacon is around for Mac. I have it. It is on the MAS, although I bought it ages ago as a download via Amazon. It was OK but a bit patronising!
