A New NNR For Bradford – Biodiversity Partnership Consultation Event

Wednesday 4th October -  From 9 am to 4pm

Committee Room 1 – Bradford City Hall

Hello Biodiversity Partnership,

I hope this email finds you well.

I have some exciting news and a request for your help.

We have been talking with Natural England about their Nature Recovery Project for Bradford and the South Pennines, which is an exciting programme in its own right. One element Natural England (and Bradford MDC) are eager to realise as part of the Nature Recovery Project is the is the creation of a National Nature Reserve, the first in West Yorkshire, in Bradford District.

Obviously we are very excited about this prospect and we are very keen to see a site designated in the district. But this is where the help and knowledge of the Biodiversity Partnership is needed. There are several strong contenders in the district due to their existing high profiles for wildlife and heritage. However, the designation does not necessarily have to be for a site with the highest value in the district but could also be a means of enhancing somewhere with the potential to see improvements through trial of conservation techniques and habitat enhancement or creation.

Apologies for the short notice, City of Bradford MDC and Natural England will be holding a consultation event in Committee Room 1 of City Hall where member of the Biodiversity Partnership and other local groups will be invited to come and work with Natural England facilitators to identify the best site or sites in the district. Doors will be open from 9am until 4pm.

Please see the attached Selection Principles for NNRs in England to help you think about possible sites.

Things to think about and ideas to bring with you to the event:

  • Where do you think a new National Nature Reserve should (or shouldn’t) be located?
    • Sites have to be owned by Bradford MDC
    • Current good candidates include: Baildon Moor, Ilkley Moor, Harden Moor, St Ives, Penistone…
    • Do you agree with these sites as part of a new NNR, are there any sites you would omit or additional sites that would like to see included?
  • What would you like to see as part of a new National Nature Reserve?
    • Most of the candidate sites are uplands moorlands with a mixture of grasslands, heath, wetland and woodlands.
    • How would you foresee management of sites to allow natural processes to occur and develop?
    • How might nature conservation, management and public recreational use interact on the site?
    • What should be the management goals and objectives be for the site?
  • What other sites might compliment the formation of a new National Nature Reserve?
    • The West Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy is likely to include a strategy for the designation of more Local Nature Reserves and other Local Wildlife Sites and other sites may be complementary to the headline NNR sites and South Pennine sites. Any ideas for sites to be included as supporting sites to an NNR (as we discussed for the Wildlife Habitat Network at the last meeting).

Please let us know if you’ll be able to attend on 4th October and what time you can come down.

Looking forward to seeing and talking with you.

David
