Hey there, acolytes of The Majestic Bundle o' Beans,
We're now a mere two weeks away from our journey to the burrito by the
beach! To take our minds off the salivations of burrito anticipation,
shall we discuss said jog?
First off, who's coming? I'm in (duh!). Who else? Who's in for the
whole enchilada, er... burrito? Who wants to partake of a few bites or
nibbles (i.e. run or hike just part of it)? Who can provide aid? Who
might wanna take pictures or gawk and giggle? Speak up!
Please help me to encourage all involved to join our mailing list:
http://groups.google.com/group/br100 We don't have a lot of messages,
but some important info is here. Most importantly, please
print
out and bring copies of those very high-res topo maps I uploaded.
Yes, a GPS would be a Very Good Idea on this run. Cell service is
spotty, and we'll be in surprisingly remote places.
Also carry a
copy of the detailed course description:

Ann and Beth (my partner, and our good friend) will spend the night in
the Sierra Club Hiker's Hut in Sam MacDonald Park. They'll have some
food (hot soup available!), and offer a chance to warm up if it's a
blustery night. This will be at about mile 57. If you'd like to have
a drop bag there, get it to me
on or before the 26th, since Ann
& Beth won't be at the start.
I've gotten a number of questions from folks interested in running only
part of the course. Some fairly accessible entry/exit points include
Half Moon Bay, Alice's Restaurant (Highway 84 & Skyline), La Honda,
and Big Basin Redwoods, among others. To make this happen on this
point-to-point course, some car shuttle needs to be arranged. Please
express your interest here on this mailing list, finding like-minded
souls with whom to shuttle vehicles.
Another option for partial runs is to use transit. That leaves two
primary options: Run SF to Half Moon Bay, or Half Moon Bay to Santa
Cruz. The rest of the course is pretty transit-starved. However,
there is a Big Basin bus to Santa Cruz on the weekends...
Regarding speed / cutoff time, keep in mind that it's best to arrive in
Santa Cruz in time to catch the 8:05 PM bus to San Jose. This connects
with the northbound 9:00 PM Caltrain back to San Francisco. That gives
a 36-hour hard cutoff (miss it, and you're looking at begging a Very
Major Favor from a loved one for a ride). For comparison sake, this
run last year took me about the same amount of time as the Tahoe Rim
Trail 100 (about 28 hours).
Okay, that's it for now. Who's in?
Seeya in a coupla weeks,
- Fred
