Subject: How to get on the air with FT8 - email #1

INTRODUCTION – HOW TO GET ON THE AIR WITH FT8

Hello Christopher Petroff, W5CBP

Fellow BC ARES member, Jim Frazier, KC5RUO, here.  I think the best way to get you on the air with FT8, JT65, and JT9 is to simply describe my hardware and software configuration over a series of 6 emails.  This will be the first one.  Let's start with my hardware configuration in email #2, then proceed to software configuration and operational tips in emails #3, #4,  the WSJT-X/ICOM 718 radio configuration in email #5, and finally, a typical FT8 QSO in email #6.  Then, depending on how far into the weeds you would like to go, the follow-on emails could be about the technical aspects of how FT8, JT65, and JT9 works.  If you want to accelerate the learning curve we could meet in the BC EOC Radio Room for a real demonstration and hands-on experience using the IC-718.

Below are references that you may find helpful:

  1. FT8  is relatively new, it came out in July 2017, so I got my start on JT65 and JT9 late 2016.  I used an ARRL publication, WORK THE WORLD WITH JT65 AND JT9, Digital communication via Amateur Radio, by Steve Ford, WB8IMY. It is a very good book and I virtually got on JT65 and JT9 using that book.
  1. Another ARRL publication, Get on the Air with HF Digital, also by Steve Ford, WB8IMY. I have this book and Chapter Four is about JT65.
  1. QST, October 2017, Work the World with WSJT-X, Part 1: Operating Capabilities, pg 30.
  1. QST, Novenber 2017, Work the World with WSJT-X, Part 2: Codes, Modes, and Cooperative Software Development, pg 34,  gets into the nitty-gritty of how it works.
  1. There are probably lots of how-tos You Tubes out there on the subject as well.
