I've always been a big fan of Ham Radio Deluxe (http://www.hrdsoftwarellc.com/default.html).  You can download it for free (I think they sell support now).

I am surprised no one has mentioned Digipan. This is the program I have downloaded, appears to work very well in receive mode. I have not yet put in an interface between the computer and the HF transceiver for full operation. That should happen in the next two weeks. However, please go to this link to read about and to download the program.http://www.digipan.net/

I too was surprised that Digipan was not mentioned, already. I have it downloaded, and have used it in receive mode. Not yet tried transmit. Waiting for my Signalink interface, though I have one of Skip Teller's interface kits. (slow kit builder). One member of our club, Yavapai ARC, Prescott AZ gave a talk on PSK31, using digipan. He loves it. Demonstration went well even with a vert. antenna inside the school bldg.

What software did you end up using?

I am having issues with my rx as all I get on the Digpan software is gibberish.  Do you have a screen shot of what the received messages look like?

I’ve not been watching this thread too close, so forgive me if I repeat someone..

If you are new to digital modes, stay with a simple program to start, DigiPan is basic, HRDeluxe (PSK31 Deluxe etc) is too complex to start with.

You need to keep your transmit levels as low as possible, the cleaner signals will keep you in good stead with the guys on either side of you.

Traffic, set your VFO at 14.070 MHz using USB and let the sound card QSY up the band. Right now at 13:43EDT, I hear ONE PSK31 signal on 20 meters. You will find most activity in the evenings and weekends. Well, maybe there are three guys on now.

Sound connections – I cannot help there.

I would suggest that you download the doc files for Ham Radio Deluxe and DigiPan. Skip goes into detail on DigiPan and Simon goes deeper on HRD.

I use HRD and a program that you might not be able to find, Zakanaka by K4CY. I like the GUI in Zakanaka, HRD is too complex for me right now, I am getting back into PSK after about 8 years off the air.

Dave,

1.  Is your receiver set to the right frequency?  14070 for 20 meters
2.  Check your receive connection to your computer:  i.e.  Audio out on transceiver to audio  in on your computer (mike input)
If you don't see any traffic then something is wrong with your computer sound input.

Sound connections: if by that is meant sound from the receiver, try adjusting the volume control on your radio. Mine is extremely sensitive to adjustment; a tiny, tiny move of the knob will put a solid smear on the waterfall in Digipan. Then use your volume control for the input to your computer (line-in for desktop; mike for laptop) to adjust the waterfall appearance. Also use the help feature in Digipan to get comfortable with the adjustments.

I also have little activity on 20 meters. And so far I get about 75-80% accuracy in the words received.

This may sound silly, but go back to basics.

A) Check your radio. antenna, signal output, etc

Are you sure everything is completely plugged in. USB upside down?
correct polarity on barrel plugs? 3.5mm in 3.5mm jack, etc?

Are ALL connections in the right port and firmly plugged in and making
contact?

Check for broken wires in connector barrels.

Is everything needed in your signal path; and powered up? Radio, sound
card, external modem, PC.

Have you selected the right sound source in your PCs correct modem in
and out?
DM780 is bad for defaulting back to the PCs default configuration when
power is lost to devices like Signal Link.

In Digipan "Configure": go to "Bands". Is 20 meter checked and have you chosen "USB?

Your waterfall shows you are using "tone" so, click on "Configure" and select "Bands"; choose 20 meter and click on "USB".

de Mike G3PGA:-
The ability to set up your radio for psk modes comes with experience.
Many stations are finding the PSK modes popular but do not fully
understand how to set up the computer and radio for the mode.
I hope the following advice will help..
The important thing to remember is that it is very easy to overdrive the
radio with too much audio from the computer sound card causing QRM
and SPLATTER....
I find the following is a good way to start:-
1) Tune your transmitter to say 40 watts output to a good aerial vswr
having made sure you have a clear frequency first or preferably tune
    into a dummy load.
2) Using the soundcard drive sliders ( Volume + Wave ) whilst keying
the radio move them up or down to achieve just under the 40 watts
drive level. You will find the adjustment procedure within the software
you are using. Or, use the rotary level control on Signalink type interface.
If you push the drive level over it WILL splatter.
3) Check the ALC meter reading and if its any more that ZERO then
reduce the soundcard drive sliders slightly to achieve the ZERO ALC.
This is very IMPORTANT and is the worst cause of overdriven signals.
4) Make SURE the speech processor is OFF.
5) Double check your interface is OK.
That's all there is to it and you will have a clean signal with NO splatter
or excessive sidebands which cause qrm and spoil the mode for others.
I hope this will help you to set up correctly and you enjoy the mode as
much as I.
Any query please ask.

I see a lot of 599 responses on PSK 20 meter; I don't believe them, It would be much better to transmit a request for a realistic RSQ to get the contact to tell you the truth about your signal. It would be even better to tell your contact you are going idle for a minute and ask him to check your  IMD.

Hi Group
The whole problem is there in a nutshell.
There are very few genuine 599 signals in actual fact.
The reason is of course the automated signal report of “599”
which is included in every single stations setup. Those drastically
in error by overdriving receive my “splatter macro” and the offer
of help to correct the problem. Most do NOT reply and simply go QRT
presumably in embarrassment. Some respond seeking help, and some
of those are genuinely grateful. Finally, some just never learn which is
a great shame.
“IF IN DOUBT ASK”........always...

HRD used to have a sound card calibration, where you could set the error
between TX and RX.

I cannot seem to find that option in the 5.24.0.36 version.

Does anyone know if it is still there??

John,

My bet would be on FLDIGI.  Support is terrific and the price is right - FREE !!!
You will also need a good Logger to handle all the QSO's you will have and all good Pgms do that. Fldigi works well with DXLabs  yet another excellent and FREE software.
I use Windows 7 on a quad core home brew computer with 8gig Ram.
Your computer skills will be needed what ever you chose.
Best of luck
