I am new to the hobby and have begun to enjoy HF. I am on a very limited budget and due to my full time RV lifestyle I must also keep my equipment to a minimum size and weight.

I am trying to get into bpsk31 using my old Kenwood TS-141s transceiver, a Raspberry Pi computer running fldigi and a SignaLink USB interface on 20M.

I am able to receive pretty well, in spite of having only a hamstick single band vertical whip atop my RV trailer for an antenna. But I cannot get my transmitter keyed at all. The software allows me to "Tune" and it (the software) thinks, it seems, that it is sending a tone, but the interface does not show a PTT active nor does the transceiver switch to transmit mode.

I previously tried using essentially the same setup but with a laptop running windows 10 and Digipan software. I was able to transmit with that configuration but it was inconvenient to connect, disconnect and reconnect for I use the laptop in a location across the room from the transceiver when I am not doing radio stuff. So the hardware at least the interface to the radio is okay.

I feel that I must be doing something wrong in the Rig Control part of the fldigi setup which is very confusing to me. Too many options listing too many unfamiliar acronyms are given. Do I need additional software to run in conjunction with fldigi for rig control?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this problem.

Hello Jerry from KC5RUO

This is just an idea because I am not familiar with Raspberry Pi and FLDIGI running on Rasberry PI. It is possible close proximity to the antenna can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems that latches-up PSK31 software execution.  I was subjected to this behavior in the early days of National Parks on the Air, 2016, until I realized what was going on and installed RF chokes on all of my interface cables. USB cables, SignaLink interface cables, etc. act as antennas especially if you are operating in close proximity to the antenna. RF radiation can come through your windows.  In one location the national park put me in a canyon picnic area. RF radiation bouncing off the rock walls came through the front windshield and latched-up the PSK31 transmit PTT operation.

Your transmissions that were successful using a laptop and Digipan could have been because you were further from the antenna. By the way, I used laptop running Windows 7 and Digipan throughout my BPSK31 NPOTA activations.

Have you tried this same configuration inside your shack using the outside antenna? Does it work  there?  How about into a dummy load? Tried that?  If you can get it to work from your house shack and then it fails to work in the RV, I'd suspect what Jim had to say. I've never tried one of those little computers,  and a question I have, is that little computer shielded?

If you’re not seeing any signal on your radio while transmitting, I’d suggest looking in Options to confirm the right outbound audio connection has been selected.

If it’s not going into transmit, then that sounds like a mismatch in the address etc of the USB. There’s a Test button that can help diagnose that.
