Citywide Parent Council – Meeting Summary
November 18, 2025
Thank you to everyone who attended. Below is a recap of key updates and discussion points to share with your school communities.
BPS announced school closures and reconfigurations impacting:
Lee Academy
Another Course to College
Community Academy of Science and Health
Henderson Inclusion School
Families raised concerns about the limited community engagement leading up to these decisions.
The closure of Henderson’s Grades 9–12 Inclusion program was a major concern, given its national reputation in inclusive education.
The Office of Opportunity Gaps (OOG) presented on aligning literacy practice across schools, homes, and community spaces.
The Office of Family & Community Advancement (OFCA) highlighted the importance of family liaisons and available engagement resources.
Goal: Strengthen literacy outcomes by aligning practices across school and home.
Many families are not fully aware of current literacy strategies used in classrooms.
Dr. Rose encouraged schools to sign up for deeper discussions about district strategic objectives and literacy initiatives.
Family liaisons are essential, but larger schools often lack adequate staffing.
OFCA offers coaching and professional development for liaisons.
Parents are encouraged to connect with their school’s family liaison to access resources and support.
Limited community engagement prior to closure decisions.
Lack of a clear transition plan for affected Henderson high school students.
Staffing gaps for family liaisons in high-enrollment schools.
Difficulty locating current information on closures and transitions on the BPS website.
Families not consistently aware of school literacy practices.
Ensuring equitable access to specialized programs, especially for students with disabilities.
