The December Citywide Parent Council meeting focused on major district updates, family engagement supports, and resources for Boston Public Schools families. The meeting was held virtually with interpretation services and began with brief technical delays related to Zoom hosting.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority approved $700 million in funding for the rebuilding and expansion of Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. The proposed project could add grades 7 and 8 and eventually double enrollment, pending additional studies and approvals.
Parents were reminded that the School Committee vote on proposed school closures was scheduled for December 18, 2025.
CPC leadership encouraged families to ask questions at their schools about:
How closures may affect their school community
Criteria used to determine closures
Bilingual and multilingual programming
Implementation of the district’s inclusive education plan
Families with students receiving special education services were advised that requesting an IEP meeting can be an important strategy to ensure services transfer appropriately, supports are documented, and transition plans are in place.
The Office of Family Engagement and Advancement shared an overview of its mission and services, including:
Coaching school-based family liaisons
Supporting School Site Councils and parent leadership
Offering family education workshops in areas such as STEM, academic learning, and leadership development
Families were encouraged to work through their school’s family liaison and watch for workshop information via ParentSquare and the BPS website.
Boston Saves presented its children’s savings program:
All eligible BPS students in grades K2–6 receive a $50 seed deposit
Families can earn additional incentives by linking accounts, saving regularly, and reading with children
Funds can be used for college, career training, or qualifying post-secondary expenses
Parents asked questions about eligibility, opt-in/opt-out procedures, and communication. CPC members emphasized the importance of improving outreach through ParentSquare and school liaisons.
Student mental health supports and the role of school liaisons in connecting families to resources
How parents can identify their school’s CPC representative and how to hold elections if a school is not currently represented
