Hello, all,
Isabel has scheduled a meeting with Pat Murphy and Phil Peden for Thurs, Oct. 7th at 4:30 pm. The meeting will be at Utilities (just come to the lobby and someone will meet us to take us to the conference room).

I took some photos last month, on a Sunday evening with an event at the park. It was not nearly as crowded as some, but still gave a feeling for how haphazard the parking is. I included a few from a location off of Covenanter, to help us visualize how it would be for all the park-goers to step off "into" the swale.

You can see the photo album here:

Some residents on Dunn St. have had park patrons parking on their lawns. Can anyone get photos of this?

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary and everyone,

I think we need to be clear amongst ourselves what sort of a problem this is.  Are the people living near the park concerned that the stormwater plans will make it hard to park there, or are they quietly happy that it will discourage park users from parking in front of their houses?  Neither is a right or wrong answer, but have very different impact.  Depending on that answer, we'd have to think about the impact of Park parking on surrounding streets, or consider different solutions near the park and further away at places where street  parking is desirable.

I'll write Phil now unless I hear from others who have this information.  Is Covenanter their model of a 'swale' for above-ground water management or is that different?  I know what some practices are even in our city, but I would like to see what they specifically envision here as a model.  I don't know what style they feel fits the dimensions of our neighborhood.  Anyone have information I don't?

      See you at the meeting,
      Jeff

I have not followed this really closely, but I still like the way my property looks at present.  What exactly is being proposed?

I’m glad Jeff spoke up.  Following our earlier site tour, I am all the more convinced that some properties do have a problem, while others do not – even on the same block of and further down street on Dunn. We know from that walk  from Dixie down  Dunn Street, the impact of storm water over flow changes to the opposite side of the street after crossing Allen Street.  Neither our group nor City Engineering has surveyed  by a house to house inquiry and interview of the residents in the areas in question.  And which areas are in question?  That too must be ascertained.  And then the engineers  can offer solutions which I hazard are not going to be the same because of the topographical issues which are not visible on flat plan even if it does have grading contours ascribe onto it and neither wanted nor needed by all parties in a legally drawn plot map.

Hi everyone,
The parking situation is a facet of the larger stormwater discussion. My concern is that if swales go in along Dixie, Allen or Dunn, it will complicate the parking situation for Bryan Park events, making it harder to park there. However, I think people will park along these streets no matter how hard it is. There is nowhere else to park while attending an event at the park. For very crowded events, cars are parked bumper-to-bumper on both sides of the streets.

The Covenanter photos are my own. I just thought it had a similar setup, with people trying to park along the swales.

My suggestion is for the city to consider drainage pipes under a gravel bed for the streets directly adjacent to the park, so that people can continue to park there. This would not be the best solution for every location, of course.

The point of the meeting Isabel has set up with Phil and Pat is so that they can show us their engineering plans for the possible swales, and the exact locations where they are thinking of putting them in. Then we will have accurate information to work from.

Thanks,
Mary

I live on Dunn Street and am not at all quietly happy about any modifications to my front yard.
