Our verdict on the G8 Summit: Cooking the books and cooking the planet

After three days of talking, the Italian G8 Summit was more about broken promises and photo opportunities, instead of real progress on solving poverty. Jeremy Hobbs, Oxfam International Executive Director tells how tells how Berlusconi's G8 was an exercise in spin. Some of our best stunt pictures from the L'Aquila Summit.
Pakistan: We're calling for the safe, voluntary return of displaced people

Three months after the clashes in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province began, we're highlighting the right of Internally Displaced People to return voluntarily and the need to establish sustainable security in their home villages. We're also responding to the fastest growing displacement in history, providing emergency support to nearly 360,000 internally displaced men, women and children.

It will take more than new deadlines to finalize a ‘development’ trade round

World trade rules will not be reformed in the interests of poor countries despite this month’s G8+5’s commitment to finalize the stagnant Doha trade talks by 2010. Our new report says that the Doha Round has become an exercise in prizing open developing country markets rather than one to rebalance decades of unfair agricultural and industrial trade rules.

Rape, forced labor, reprisal attacks and torture surge in eastern Congo

Rape, forced labor, reprisal attacks and torture are surging in eastern Congo as the result of the recent UN-backed military offensive, according to our new in-depth survey of nearly 600 villagers. “People are living in constant fear of violent attack. This suffering is not inevitable.” Some 800,000 people have been displaced in North and South Kivu since the offensive was launched at the beginning of the year, according to the UN.

Honduras: Political instability is affecting our work

The current political instability in Honduras has forced us to reduce our activities on development projects in the country to approximately 60% of capacity. We appeal to the authorities and the Honduran leaders to respect the rights and liberties of people and civil society organizations.
