BPMN model without swimlanes...?

Is it acceptable to leave out the swimlanes in my model ?

It depends. If you are talking about BPMN Lanes, then the answer is Yes. However, if you are refering also to BPMN Pools, then it is more complicated. You can remove a single Pool if your model does not already contain a process outside a Pool. This means that your model can contain at most one process outside a Pool, and the other processes (if any) mus be defined inside Pools.
