The next meeting of the Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will be on Monday, July 7th from 6:45 until 7:45 PM in the Quiet Study Room.  The topic of discussion will be The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

Juliet   Ashton, a writer coping with shortages in postwar London, receives a letter from a stranger. Dawsey Adams is a pig farmer in Guernsey, a Channel Island occupied by the Germans during the War.    His story about a most unusual book club sparks an avid correspondence between Juliet and other members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Juliet comes to know Dawsey and his friends through their letters.  The most interesting character is Elizabeth McKenna, a clever, kind, and courageous woman, who changed the lives of everyone she knew. When Juliet decides to write a book about the Occupation of Guernsey, she stays in Elizabeth’s house and forms a special bond with her five-year-old daughter, Kit.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a charming epistolary novel that will appeal to fans of Jane Austen, Helen Simonson, and Nevil Shute.
