Book Club Reads Beale in November
Bloomfield, NJ, October 7, 2014
For Immediate Release
The next meeting of the Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will be on Monday, November 3rd from 6:45 until 7:45 PM in the Quiet Study Room. The topic of discussion will be I Am Not Esther by Fleur Beale.
New Zealand teen Kirby is shocked when her mother leaves her with an unknown aunt and uncle while she works in Africa. The fourteen-year-old girl is even more surprised to learn that her new family belongs to a fundamentalist cult. They rename her “Esther,” forbid television or any books besides the Bible, and assume she will want an early marriage to a believer.
Fleur Beale’s novel was written for young adults but the issues of faith, family, and identity are ageless.
