Hi all, thanks for visiting my walkthrough for Beholder Complete Edition. This is my second walkthrough. After receiving so many 'Thanks' on my first walktrough, I felt very motivated to contribute to this site even more!
I saw this game on Game Pass and based on just the one image in the Game Pass app I decided to install the game. The last time I played a game because I liked the image was Call of the Sea, which turned out to be a great game that was right up my alley. Beholder was no exception!
Beholder is a game by Warm Lamp Games that was released in November 2016 and appeared on Game Pass in December 2020. The Game Pass version is the Complete Edition, meaning you get the base game plus the Blissful sleep DLC. Both the base game and the DLC have some strong 1984 vibes going on (the book by George Orwell). The setting in the game intrigues me and is not something I have seen in a game yet (but I'm no hardcore gamer).
In the base game, you will be playing as Carl, a landlord of a building with 6 apartments. The setting of the game is a dystopian future where the totalitarian State controls almost everything in terms of what people can or cannot have, do or say. Because you work for the State, you must spy on your tenants. You can do this by placing camera's in the apartments (making you see what's going on without peeping through the keyhole), by searching their apartments for prohibited items, talking to the tenants about themselves and other tenants. Based on the information you gather, you can profile the tenants, earning some cash. When you find prohibited items, you can report the tenant, causing them to be arrested and evicted from your building.
While you are doing all this, you'll also receive some tasks to complete. Some are on a timer, some are untimed. You can receive tasks from either your employer (the Ministry) or the other tenants, as well as 'mystery guests' that either call you, or visit your building.
The game is very decision-based, causing a lot of forks and different endings depending on your choices and actions. In short, you can either play for or against the State.
In the Blissful Sleep DLC, you are playing as Hector, and this game takes place sometime before the base game. Hector is the landlord of the same apartment building as the base game. You may even recognize some of the tenants!
Where the base game focuses more on the totalitarian State that rules her people with an iron fist, Blissful Sleep focuses around a euthanasia center that provides a service called 'Blissful Sleep' to euthanize people when they reach the age of 85. Although Hector is still young, his age has been documented incorrect causing you to already start on a times quest that will initiate Hectors Blissful Sleep procedure. With the help of your tenants you must try to avoid this from happening.
You can still talk to, observe and search the apartments of your tenants, and profile them for some cash. But the report part to evict the tenants plays a much smaller role this time. Your main objective is to avoid being euthanized.
If you decide to play this mod then you are going to spend 20+ hours doing so, hence, 5 minutes spent on the README will enhance your experience greatly.
There is a complete walkthrough included with the d/l now. You will need SoU & HoTU to play this and be updated to version 1.65.
This is my version of Eye of the Beholder 1.
This is a faithful reproduction, with a few enhancements, allowing for the NWN game engine plus a few surprises to keep EOB veterans on their toes.
The RESPAWN option is disabled in line with the original game, so please remember to save your game often.
The module was written specifically for SP. If you wish to play an MP version, then see this page: -beholder for 'Dark's version
[Editors Note: EOB_HAK_ver5_.7z not required for play, is backed up here for modders looking for extra content.
It's also required for another Eye of the Beholder project: EoB by Rick Francis (a.k.a. Darks) - mentioned by Wolfspirit above]
Tried this again and was not happy with the slow and unsteady gameplay once more. Having to rely on the Walk Throughs, which were very hard to follow I would have to say (the block format is not my favorite map type!) made this a real challenge to my patience. As a stripper you are given some weird starting gear, just a light flail and bow and arrows, and then thrust into an admittedly low combat sewer system. All the switches, pressure plates and secret doors were not my style and I am giving up just slightly into the second level. I know many will like this type of module but certainly not me.
At the very beginning you can turn right from the shrine and go down with William and Mumyo. However, this is not necessary. You have to fight a few Yoki after you get down to the lower location. Also, watch out for one of them on the top left. He shoots at you from a safe distance. If you have a long-range weapon that inflicts heavy damage - use it and get rid of your enemy.
After defeating them, or if you prefer to go straight to the main boss, head straight ahead into the building. Jump down and walk straight through the balcony. Stay on the same floor you're currently on. Go outside while you're there. Then, head towards the containers with two Yoki inside.
When you get close enough, they'll jump out of the containers and attack you. You can shoot them before they start the fight and they will lose some of their health. After defeating them, climb up the ladder.
You're now in a very familiar location from your previous mission. While going down, you'll encounter Kappa. Once you've killed her, go upstairs again. To the left of the building there is a Mezuki. Fighting him is not important, but you can pick up a lot of items. After defeating him, enter the building.
The entrance to the building is guarded by a Magatsu warrior. You shouldn't have much trouble fighting him with the support of two allies. Take the stairs to the right of the building. On the lower floor, you'll notice two Tessos. They guard a chest. After defeating them, climb to the top by using a ladder.
If you haven't shot down a Yokai soldier before, now you're going to have to fight him on the balcony. After defeating him, go ahead. At the end of the hall, on the left, there will be another Tesso. After defeating him, step back and take the stairs to the top, where you will spot Ubume and Tengu.
Shoot down the Amrita crystal that is being held by Ubume and immediately runs towards her to strike the final blow. At this moment, the land of Yokai and Tengu will appear. By killing Ubume, you will free the area from the land of Yokai, so focus on her first. Go through a gap in the wall - there is a second shrine nearby.
The second shrine is actually a passageway to the arena where you have to confront final boss of the game - Otakemaru. You'll find a lot of enemies on this path, but you can ignore them completely and run ahead. Even if you die, they will respawn all the time.
Otakemaru is behind the door. He is the final boss of the game. Good luck. We have prepared a detailed walkthrough of this boss fight on another page of our guide. It is worth checking it as this boss battle is one of the most difficult encounters in the whole game. Also, keep in mind that Mumyo and William are no longer helping you from this point on.
