I picked up a copy of this game at a local thrift a few weeks ago. It
took me a long time to get around to installing it because this is the
sequel (the original is just called "The Suffering"), and I had read a
few places that it had Starforce on it.

I just installed the game yesterday (after uninstalling the "ad-
supported" copy of the original). After installing a little window
titled "Protection System" (purple background with odd metal spheres
held together on poles) told me to reboot. That's it, I thought; I've
got StarForce.

Today I tried out the old Device Manager trick and Starforce isn't
listed, even though I have Hidden Devices shown.

The "Protection System" window still pops up when you try to run the
game without a disc installed.

It's pretty obvious I now have StarForce (again! I played Chaos Theory
once before), but it's not showing up in the traditional manner. Any
ideas?

A little update: Finally decided to uninstall the game and StarForce
(and this before installing Left 4 Dead, which it feels like I've had
forever, now), and a quick check of the Device Manager shows the
entries for Starforce as hidden non-Plug 'n Play drivers:

StarForce Protection Environment Driver (version 1.x)
StarForce Protection Helper Driver (version 2.x)
StarForce Protection Synchronization Driver (version 2.x)
StarForce Protection VFS Driver (version 2.x)

I imagine these will uninstall nicely, and hope this will be my last
update on the subject - so I hope.
