Hi Bob, Jaime,
If you want to model WW2 in OO, between Matchbox and Fujimi, and probably some other UK companies, you should have most of the common subjects covered.
For military subjects in 1/87 (HO), Roco (now Herpa) MiniTanks range is best known. But there are others. Artitec has an impressive line of high quality resin 1/87 (and N scale) models, many with photo-inch, everything from World War I to modern day. They've even started a range in 1/72. 1/87 is a popular military scale in Europe and there are many manufacturers, e.g., SDV; Trident; Hauler; Wespe; Preiser to name a few. Boley is a UK maker of HO military models. Many of those models are more than just a three or four piece model but rather multi-part kits. Fidelis Models is a good place to see what is available.
There were even some behind the Iron Curtain companies like EKO although they tended to scale in TT (a weirdo scale like O in that the scale is different, significantly - 1/100 or 1/120 - depending on where in Europe you are) and OOO (1/152).
I mentioned G scale/gauge. Not looking up any of my notes or websites but IIRC G scale is 1/22.5, while G gauge encompasses 1/20-1/32.
Yes, you've read that correctly, 1/32! That scale is referred to in model railroad world as "1 Scale", "Gauge 1", "1 Gauge" and one or two others again depending on if you're in europe, germany, or elsewhere. Marklin makes a lot of them but they're manufactured in Europe and england. Maybe there's even some here in the US I don't know. Then the cool - er, hot - thing about them is a lot of the steam locomotives are live steam! Being a true 1/32 (3/8") scale, they are close to the universal military scale of 1/35, but most of us are probably remember the relatively limited military models from Monogram and Airfix in 1/32, not to mention the airplanes. There is even a very small range of model railroad in 1/72.
Modelers with the money and space would do well to choose US O scale if you want to come by and trains and military because it is 1/48.
Gang, I hope this is useful and did not take away from the Matchbox subject.
All my best,
Fred Boucher
