Hello Boxsters,
It is the last Monday In April, 2026, and time for new free Download.
This weeks FD is another gleaned from Chris' recovered files.
The art was featured on what is considered to be the the first plastic model ever made.
Long time HO train producer, Varney, made this 1/240 scale kit, and released it in 1945..
This class of sub was produced during WWII and is most associated with the USS Gato.
Over the course of the war 77 of them were built and they served until 1969.
The Varney kit was one of a few they produced after the war, and this kit was originally released in 1945.
It seems that Varney was a few years too early and the generation that would eventually embrace the model kit had not been born yet.
After disappointing sales, the molds were sold to O-lin and this kit was released in 1949. Lindberg bought the molds in 1953, and the kit is still in production today, currently by Atlantis.
I selected a dozen images of this submarine for your enjoyment.
All the images are 1280 pixels.

Jean,

I've always loved the design of this sub -- it looks so much like a shark -- and the moody color of the painting really enhances the shadowy nature of a submarine.  And yeah, this sub was featured in countless films made post-war and and seen on screen again and again by baby boomers, but the Varney release was initially sold before the boomers had grown up to model-building age. I did not know that Atlantis was still selling the kit -- I will have to get one to sit next to my "Seaview" display.

Jean,
Wow! Great FD choice and images.
I think Lindberg did a Fleet Sub kit? I built Revell one.
Makes me want to watch 'Run Silent, Run Deep' now!
Been finding more WW-2 sub movies the past few years.
Some free on YouTube. Most American, some British made.
