Hello Boxsters,
This coming Thursday I will be celebrating my 78 journey around the sun.
Let the partying begin!
I will be with my lady for the festivities, her birthday is Sunday ... wahoo!
Since today is Monday, it is time for a new Free Download for your enjoyment.
New scans have been flooding my inbox for weeks and it has been wonderful to see some of these old boxarts again.
This week we present the 1963 Jo Kotula art that Aurora displayed on their small scale, 1/121 scale, kit of the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger.
This kit was first released in 1957 with the same art.
This was the final release of this kit and it has never been released since.
The F-102 first flew in 1953 and after some major changes to the fuselage, it became the USAF's primary interceptor.
The F-102 was fielded in Vietnam from about 1964 until about 1969.
I recall watching them depart and land at Bien Hoa, RVN in 1968 from Spartan ATC tower located just South of the main runway.
During production 1,000 of them were built and they served with the Hellenic and Turkish Air Forces as well.
The F-102 was featured as the primary aircraft flown by TV's "Steve Canyon" during the series run from 1958 to 1959.
The USAF retired them  in 1979.
I selected and formatted a baker's dozen images for your enjoyment.
All the images are 1280 pixels.

Jean,

Congratulations on making it this far in one piece! I'm rowing on along the time stream about 60 days ahead and can't quite get my head around the approach of the looming eighties. And happy birthday to your lady as well! Mine own is a full 1 1/2 years ahead of me. Yep... married an older woman I did. One of my better decisions.

Here's the Famous Fighters box top for the F-102. At 29c I built a lot of them back in the day! Also - the box art is much, much better than the kit itself!

I had this kit. One of the first airplanes that I built. I also had the privilege of living right under the west approach/ departure path to the Pittsburgh airport ANG base, so I saw, though sometimes only heard, the 102s based there. Being less than 10 miles from the airport, I could hear them when they took off in full afterburner well before I could see them, unless they did high speed ascent which became visible shortly after clearing the horizon. Such a departure also led to the occasional supersonic flyover at high altitude before those were banned!  There was never any chance I wouldn't have been an airplane nut, as several commercial flights also passed over our house every day, and I would lay on the bank in the backyard and stare up at the bellies of the low flying aircraft approaching from the west. The Connies were my favorite!
