Hello Boxsters,
Today's Free Download is a recent scan that was added to the archive.
The FD is the 1957, Revell art for their 1/122 scale release of the Douglas DC-7C airliner in Swissair livery.
The DC-7 was a four engine airliner that first flew in 1953.
The first model had a limited range and was mostly confined to North America.
The C model had larger engines and wings, with larger fuel tanks.
The range was increased to intercontinental and it was flown by many airlines.
The C model was the most produced.
Total production of the DC-7 was 338, of which 121 were the C model.
I selected a dozen images of DC-7s for your enjoyment.

This is such a nice kit! Even nicer is where it came from - the earlier Revell DC-7B kit! That kit was modified to 'become' a DC-7C. In order to do that Revell altered the mold (forever!!):
1. Saddle tanks were added to the engine nacelles.
2. The wing root was extended.
3. The fin was made taller.
4. Three windows were placed forward of the propline - the 7B issue had two windows.
HOWEVER - the most glaring fault was that the fuselage was NOT extended the proper 40" (to accommodate that third window)! It's easy to understand why - this would have made the kit fuselage longer and it would NOT have 'fit' into the standard 12" box!
Uh-oh!
Considering it's odd scale and the times and it's not too surprising and overall the Revell kit is both gorgeous and a disappointment. The original -7B, however, is quite nice - if you don't mind the scale.
On a side note, the original issue -7B was the first Revell kit to feature the 'S' on the end panel (for their Styrene cement!).
I have seen industrious modelers who have added that forward section and attended to other details to finish out the build - and it looks great!
It was also a disappointment that the -7C wasn't offered in a US airline livery.
