P39. "Klunker." "Iron Dog." Part of Cactus Air Force's "fishing fleet". And yet modern research reveals that it did not do so bad after all. Michael Claringbold has access to original Japanese documents and discovered that over New Guinea in early 1942, P-39s we're not War winners but they also weren't sitting ducks like we've been told for the last 80-some years. The Soviets used it as an air superiority fighter against Bf 109s and Focke-Wulfs. We put progressively more powerful Allison's in them and they performed okay, although they were but then surpassed by the P-38 & P-47. There's an excellent channel on YouTube called Greg's aircraft and automobiles. He's an experienced pilot with a lot of experience training people, and draws a lot of his data out of the the legendary book Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, and he explains some of the above in this video:
