Dear Friends,
Our joint production with Bay Chamber Concerts featuring the Lemonade Choir, members of the Midcoast Brass Quintet and Halcyon String Quartet has been a big success. To date, more people have watched this concert than we would have had in two live performances. The video has also been broadcast on local access TV stations in Waldo, Knox and Lincoln counties. The number of viewers is well over 1000 by now.
If you haven't watched the video it's not too late. You can find it by going to Bay Chamber Concerts' YouTube Channel. You'll see the link to it there. It will remain on the YouTube Channel indefinitely.
I'm happy to announce that we will again collaborate with Bay Chamber Concerts for our Memorial Day Concert, this year on the 31st of May. The choral portion of the program will feature selected movements of Rachmaninoff's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and a short work in praise of spring by Rachmaninoff (sung in English).
But before we get started on the Memorial Day concert, Sean Fleming and I have concocted a bit of fun for those of you who are game to try it: We're going to produce a virtual choir performance of Rodgers and Hart's immortal tune "My Funny Valentine." This will be your chance to try being in a virtual choir production and it will be easy. Everybody will sing the melody and Sean will improvise on the piano as accompaniment.
"My Funny Valentine" will be available for you to see and send to friends by Valentine's Day (14 February). The deadline for submissions will be Monday 25 January. You'll receive a backing track that you listen to over headphones and sing your part as you hear it. This will be an audio-video production and it's entirely voluntary. Haven't you ever wondered what it would be like to be in one of these videos?
The Valentine project will be funded from a grant we received to perform the Brahms Requiem at Bowdoin - a project, alas, that will not take place. What better way to spend this money than making a musical valentine?
The Valentine project will be open to everybody - members of Bowdoin Chorus, Down East Singers, any other choral group and individuals who like to sing old Broadway tunes.
If you're frightened by the prospect of recording yourself, don't be. You don't have to do this. But give it a try. You might sound better than you think!
We'll start working on the Rachmaninoff pieces and "My Funny Valentine" on Tuesday 19 January on Zoom from 7 to 8 PM. These Zoom sessions will run every Tuesday until further notice.
An informational Zoom meeting will take place on Tuesday 12 January from 7 to 8 PM. The invitation was already sent to you but in case you already deleted it I'll paste it at the bottom of this email.
Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Tony
