Durham City Council is very close to the final decision about backyard hens in Durham, and at this point it looks like it could go either way. There is one and possibly two important meetings coming up where we need as much support as we can gather.
The city council has already heard our case at their working session in December, and they are scheduled to vote on it at the city council meeting Monday January 5th. There are still some concerns about the new ordinance, so we have requested that they delay the vote until February 2nd to give us more time to gather public support and answer any questions or concerns from city council members and citizens. The problem is, they vote on delaying the issue during the meeting, so we won't know if the vote is delayed until the meeting January 5th. That means, every supporter of backyard chickens in Durham needs to be at the meeting January 5th at 7 pm. This could be our last chance to make our case. If the vote is delayed, then we'll all need to come back on February 2nd.
Please try to come to the meeting this Monday, January 5th. It starts at 7 pm in city council chambers at city hall. If you can't make it, send a neighbor or a friend. Tell everyone you know. Also, it wouldn't hurt to make last minute phone calls on Monday to city council members to let them know you support this ordinance.
Here's the schedule for the meeting. We're number 18, under the public hearings section. Hope to see you there. If you need a Durham HENS shirt to wear, we have more for sale at SEEDS.
