Calling all HENS supporters--the moment has arrived!
City Council is planning to
vote on backyard hens next
Monday, February 2nd at 7 pm, which means we have one week to convince fellow citizens and city council members that this is a good idea for Durham.
On February 2nd, we need to pack the room with supporters from all of Durham. Please come, and bring 10 people with you!
What else you can do to help:
-forward this email to everyone you know
-Call and email city council to let them know you support hens in
Durham. The main number for city council is 560-4396 and then you can
ask for each individual council member from there
-Talk about the benefits of hens to your coworkers, at your places of worship, to your neighbors, friends and family. There is
a lot
of misinformation out there, which results in opposition to the
ordinance. Important points to make: no roosters allowed, chickens
will not roam free--the ordinance requires an enclosed coop and a pen
fenced in on all four sides and top, the fees will total $65 ($25 for
limited use agriculture permit and $40 building permit) and SEEDS and
Durham HENS are fundraising to provide support to folks unable to pay
the full amount, and bird flu
does not exist in North America. If people have other concerns you are not sure how to address, send them to me:
kav...@seedsnc.org or 683-1197
-Durham HENS are meeting this Wednesday at 6 pm at SEEDS to review and
divy up speaking points so we can sound organized on Monday at City
Hall. All are welcome. If you can't come Wednesday but you'd like to
speak at the meeting, send me an email and let me know what points
you'd like to make. We can also assign speaking points if you'd like
to speak but don't know what to say.
-Finally,
Howard
Clement's support for this ordinance is
contingent on him seeing a lot of turnout by African-American
homeowners. We
have active members of our group who fit that profile and we've reached
out to many neighborhoods, but apparently we haven't done
well enough to suit Council member Clement. If you'd like to contact him, his number at city hall is 560-4396 and email is
Howard....@durhamnc.gov.
Hope to see you Monday February 2nd at 7 pm!
