Keeping Flocks Healthy – Information for Sheep and Goat Producers

There’s always the need to obtain or review up-to-date health and
management information, particularly about how to keep flocks free of
disease, or in the new lingo “biosecure”. Whether we’re beginning
with sheep and goats, or have lots of knowledge to share, reviewing a
“healthy start”-equivalent program for our flocks makes good sense.

“Keeping Flocks Healthy” workshops for sheep and goat producers in BC
are being hosted by the BC Ministry of Agriculture, with funding from
the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Growing Forward initiative.

Date: Saturday, Nov 12, 2011

Time: 9am-3pm

Location: Grantham Hall, 6040 Old Island Hwy, Courtenay

(There will also be one at Duncan in January,
see below)

Lunch is included and a binder of useful materials will be available
at the workshops.

Please pre-register so there is enough lunch and binders for everyone.

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm Annual General Meeting

www.islandfarmersalliance.org

CanadaGap– why is it important to the farmer: CanadaGAP (Good
Agricultural Practices) is the name of the Canadian Horticultural
Council's (CHC) On-Farm Food Safety (OFFS) Program. The program
consists of national food safety standards and a certification system
for the safe production, storage and packing of fresh fruits and
vegetables. If you are planning to sell to farm products wholesale
this program will be invaluable to you.

The CanadaGAP program is an on-farm food safety program for producers,
packers and storage intermediaries of horticultural crops. It is
designed to help you implement effective food safety procedures in
your operation. Six crop-specific manuals, developed by the
horticultural industry and reviewed for technical soundness by
Canadian government officials, are designed for growers and packers
implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). The manuals are based
on the seven basic principles of the internationally-recognized HACCP
(Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) approach. The program has
been benchmarked to, and officially recognized by the Global Food
Safety Initiative (GFSI). The program is administered and maintained
by the Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC), with audit and
certification services delivered by an accredited Certification Body.

What is Program Certification?

Certification is the term used by the CHC to describe the
determination by a qualified authority that your operation meets the
standard and is being maintained on an ongoing basis. This involves
having a third party auditor from the Certification Body come to your
operation, review your OFFS manual(s) and related records, visit your
facilities and interview the operator and staff, and assess your
conformance to the CHC OFFS Audit Checklist. Since the Audit Checklist
covers all six modules, multi-crop producers need only one audit. Once
you pass the audit, you will be certified to the Program.

Certification indicates that you have in place in your operation a
system of procedures to minimize the risk of contamination to product.
The Certification Body will certify your processes, not your product.
The auditor gathers evidence to attest to the ongoing maintenance of
your food safety system, rather than simply gaining a snapshot of your
operation at a given point in time.

Call for Proposals, B.C. Agroforestry Industry Development Initiative

British Columbia's forestry (woodlot), agriculture, agri-food and agri-
products sectors can now access funding under the B.C. Agroforestry
Industry Development Initiative (AIDI) to facilitate the development
and adoption of agroforestry practices in B.C.

Agroforestry involves the intentional combination of trees with crops
and/or livestock in order to enhance production. Agroforestry can be
defined as production systems which synergistically integrate both
agricultural and forestry practices and products resulting in optimal
management of land, animal and human resources.

The AIDI is working to support the development and adoption of
agroforestry practices for the benefit of all British Columbians. A
new provincial agroforestry strategic plan (available
atwww.woodlot.bc.ca/agroforestry/) was published in 2009 to guide
development priorities and expand industry participation.

The AIDI seeks proposals for innovative projects from individuals and/
or groups that address one or more of the Initiative's strategic
goals:

Develop the business case for agroforestry practices in B.C.;
Improve market connections for agroforestry products and services;
Demonstrate agroforestry practices to showcase operational examples of
agroforestry systems;
Improve agroforestry awareness, extension and education; and,
Expand and strengthen partnerships among agroforestry practitioners
and stakeholder organizations.
Up to $421,000 dollars of funding is available to match industry
contributions to implement the AIDI’s goals through 2013. Proposals
may be submitted immediately and on an ongoing basis, with cost-share
funding allocated to qualified proponents for approved projects on
first-come, first serve basis until all funds have been committed.
All projects must be completed by December 31, 2013.

Funding for the AIDI is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In
British Columbia, the CAAP program is delivered by the Investment
Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF). The Province of British Columbia
provides in-kind support to the AIDI. The Federation of B.C. Woodlot
Associations administers the AIDI with the guidance of the
Agroforestry Management Committee, a group representing B.C.'s
agroforestry sector including agricultural, forestry and provincial
government representatives.

For further information on the AIDI, and links to the application
guide and forms, please visit www.agroforestry.info or www.woodlot.bc.ca/agroforestry/

Agriculture Information

MANURE SPREADING ADVISORY #4 - October 17

In the South Coastal region, field-stored solid agricultural wastes,
except agricultural vegetation waste, must be covered from October 1
to April 1 inclusive to prevent the escape of agricultural waste that
causes pollution (Section 9 of the Agricultural Waste Control
Regulation).

Manure applications to perennial grasses may be conducted prior to
November 1, weather permitting. Always check local forecasts prior to
manure applications.

Producers are responsible for decisions regarding manure spreading.
Legislation gives no specific dates for manure spreading, but requires
manure to be spread in a manner that does not cause pollution. Please
read the entire advisory for details and important information to
assist producers with decision-making about manure application.

British Columbia Premises Identification for Livestock and Poultry

Premises identification links livestock and poultry to their
geographic locations for planning and managing emergencies. Although
the national traceability system encompasses all livestock and poultry
species produced in Canada, the current priority for British Columbia
is to register farms and ranches producing cattle, hogs, sheep or
poultry in the BC premises database. It is recommended that owners of
other livestock species (see Premises Identification Registration
Form) should also apply for premises identification numbers.

A premises is a parcel of land where livestock or poultry are raised,
kept, assembled or disposed of and includes such places as:

• Farms/
Stables
• Hobby Farms

Feedlots
• Pastures

• Community
Pastures •
Hatcheries

Abattoirs
• Assembly Yards

• Auction/Livestock Sale
Facilities • Rendering Plants

• Zoos/Petting
Zoos •
Exhibition/Fair Grounds

• Race Tracks/Competition
Facilities • Veterinary Hospitals/
Labs

• Insemination
Centres •
Research Facilities

Owners of livestock and poultry will receive a unique premises
identification number that is unique to the parcel of land.

Premises Identification:

• allows for rapid notification of livestock and poultry
stakeholders

• helps prepare for animal health, natural disaster and food
safety emergencies (e.g. livestock disease)

• facilitates rapid evacuation of animals in a natural
disaster emergency (e.g. flood, fire)

• helps track animals in an emergency

• reduces the impact of an emergency

• helps maintain or provide for greater market access

B.C. livestock and poultry owners are invited to provide basic land
and contact information for their premises by completing a Premises
Identification Registration Formhttp://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/foodsafety/factsheets/bcpid_application.pdf
and submitting it to B.C. Ministry of Agriculture. There is no cost
to participate in the program. Information collected will assist both
industry and government in the planning and management of animal
disease outbreaks or other emergencies threatening animal or human
health.

Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/foodsafety/factsheets/bcpid_faq.pdf for more
information. If you have additional questions, email BC...@gov.bc.ca
or call 1 888-221-7141 or (604) 556-3001 and ask for a Premises
Identification Program Representative.

Maintaining Your On-Farm Dam

Dam Safety Surveillance & Maintenance (Guide from Australia)

Many farm dams suffer from age, lack of maintenance and outdated
design standards. Partial or total failure of a dam may cause
extensive damage to downstream properties, for which you, the owner,
are likely to be held liable. Common law liability, expensive repair
costs and lost income are other potential costs.

Many farm dams fail through lack of maintenance so a definite
maintenance plan will protect the life of your storage.

For dam safety information checkout the BC Ministry of Environment's
dam safety website at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wsd/public_safety/dam_safety/index.html
or contact John Baldwin in Nanaimo at e-mail address

Hi Frank,

Looks like you added the entire newsletter, lol. I have been in
contact with Mark Sweenie, berry fruit specialist at the Abbotsford
BCMAL. One point he made was that as cultivars are developed,
attention will focus on enhancing mechanical harvestability and other
desireable traits and that we will want to keep our eyes open for such
development.
