Oct 15 meeting questions:
1. Who writes proposals? It sounded like the city got the funding for
the meeting? Has a thank you letter been sent to the funder? I thank
you for hosting the meeting.
2. Has your proposal writer considered applying for food value chain
discussion grants for $5,000? Contact BC Food Value Chain Development
Fund representative Alison Fox at Aliso...@gov.bc.ca
http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/ministry/bc_value_chain_fund/BC_food_value_chain.htm
3. I read the story about your meeting in the paper too. Is there a
person that writes a lot and would get published? They are important
to have at planning meetings as well as events.
4. I work best with an “Asset Map” when I know who is who, and what
they bring to a group or co-operative venture. Is that your plan too?
a. Who attended? Who did not attend, but is interested?
b. Is there one or two “instigators” (Gary and Bob?) What is in it for
them?
c. What links in a food value chain want to take the next steps to
create a co-operative plan? Who are the people providing inputs to the
farmers?
d. Who is the person interested in being the local licensed
propagator?
e. Who are the local farmers from Rock Creek to ?Cranbrook? And are
they represented by a non-profit? How much acreage can they put in
haskap berry?
f. Who are the people, credit union, foundation etc. interested in
investing in shared harvest and processing equipment?
g. Who is the local co-op? Is everyone co-op friendly?
h. Who are the local non-profits? Can they work with for profit
businesses?
i. Who are the different levels of government?
j. The planner?
k. The processor?
l. The marketer?
m. The end use customers?
5. It sounds like Haskap Central Sask (HC) model is as a licensed
propagator and the Research and Development (R&D) done by SASK U is
paid by a royalty. This model would provide consistent quality and
quantity to the end customers’ specifications. Is it part of your plan
to have a Grand Forks licensed propagator providing local inputs?
6. Curtis mentioned something about the Sask government helping around
agro-foresty and silviculture. Does your proposal writer know about
the BC government grants for agroforestry? I am not very familiar with
the program so do not know if it would fit with haskap berries.
7. Is there is a Grand Forks person willing to invest in being the
licensed propagator? I wonder if there is Innovation funding to work
with designing rock sol planter boxes designed to the specifications
of a shared planter? The farmers can think this one out. I know that
any machinery that can replace labour makes the venture that much more
economically viable.
8. Has anybody put a financial spreadsheet together from the economic
information Curtis provided? I would have a bunch of questions after
reviewing that.
9. How did the tour at Susan’s in Midway go? Is there a video?
10. What new website just opened that was announced at the end?
11. Has anyone asked if JerseyLand Organics wants the berries for
their yogurt?
12. Can I have the new Boundary Ag Plan sent to me once it is
released? (Irene?)
13. What are your next steps?

Thanks
Frank

Hi Frank et al.
Thank you for your questions.  I am forwarding your 2 emails to our City Staff as they may be able to provide some of the answers to your questions and if not, they may be able to direct you to those who have the answers.

Regarding the funding for the Information Session of Oct 15.  Our Council endorsed my resolution, seconded by Councillor Christine Thompson, to provide the funds for the information session.  During our budget process for 2011 we included $15,000 for committee expenses.  I believe that is the section of the budget that this monies was taken from.

I'm looking forward to seeing jobs and increased economic benefit to the City of Grand Forks and the BOundary region.
Good luck in your endeavours.

Regards

Councillor Joy Davies

Thanks Frank...sorry for not getting back to you earlier. Bob and I
were the organizers and are currently working on a couple of things to
getb this off the ground immediately. Details will follow. I was the
one to write the piece in the paper and have been told I have a knack
for writing. Love your questions and I'll work at answereing them, or
working at finding out, as I move along - as will others I am sure.
Thanks, and I'll write more as I have time
