The Denver/Boulder area has a long history of good radio stations that get
too big and go bad. I can't remember any of the call letters, but I do
know that there have been many that have come and gone in the last 30 years
or so. They start out as small, locally owned stations. They get in
good programmers and let them play what they want. People start to discover
the station. More and more people tune in. Advertisers find out that more
people are listening so they buy more advertising time. Pretty soon the
advertisers start making demands (that song is offensive to my patrons, so
don't play that song, type stuff). Next thing you know the station goes
downhill. Too many ads, not enough music, and no variety, just the same
popular songs over and over and over and .... There was one guy in
particular, I can't remember the name, who started up at least 3 really
good radio stations and left them when they got too popular. This was all
back in the late 60s and 70s. Anyway, this whole thing is not new, it's
been going on for a long time. Good radio stations get too popular and
then they get reduced to some mushy lowest common denominator, overly
advertised pap. One of my favorite radio stations is KRCL in Salt Lake City,
community radio. Here I tend to bounce around on my radio dial, KGNU, KCFR,
KXPK, and one other that comes out of Greeley at 91.5. Tapes and cds are
good too.
