With a completed design in hand, I'm finally ready to go out for
bids on a project to totally redo the backyard of our house. I would
greatly appreciate any recommendations for or against any landscaping
contractors in the Boulder/Niwot/Longmont etc. area.

I am particularly interested in these companies, that I have already
contacted:

High Plains Landscaping
Matrix Gardens
Boulder Landscaping

But I will need at least one additional bid, so the names of other
companies you can recommend highly would be appreciated.

Elizabeth -
May I *strongly* recommend you contact Scott Haugland of J&S Landscaping in
Longmont. I recently purchased a new home in Niwot and selected Scott to do
my entire landscape job after meeting with several other companies. His
office number is 651-6897, but the best way to reach him is by paging him at
581-8148 - he usually returns the call quickly. Please tell him I referred
you if you call.

Scott is a straight shooter - very honest and fair, IMHO, and great to deal
with. He spent a couple hours driving me all over the Niwot area to show me
other jobs he'd done - and also to see some he didn't do just to get ideas.
He created a proposed landscape plan and a detailed cost estimate at no
charge, which is more than many landscapers will do. Scott did a *lot* of
the homes in the Somerset development, if that tells you anything - seems
like half of the people there know him by name as we drove around the area.

The runner-up for my business was Thad Napp of Napp Landscaping, also from
Longmont - don't have his number handy, but should be easy enough to find.
Like Scott, Thad was willing to come up with a full plan and cost estimate
up-front - and is also a first-class guy to deal with. It was a tough
choice - interestingly, both Scott and Thad bid within about $1k of each
other. In the end, I was just personally a bit more comfortable with Scott
and thought I was getting a little more for the same money with his bid --
but either one of them are recommended.
