Headlines Friday, May 29, 2026 *Citizens suing Boulder police over Flock cameras* Yesterday, two citizens filed a class-action lawsuit against the Boulder Police Department, alleging BPD uses Flock license plate cameras to illegally surveil people without probable cause. The plaintiffs, Gwen Steel and William Freeman, argue the department’s use of its 31 Flock cameras violates the state constitution’s provision against searches and seizures without a warrant. Freeman says he requested all Flock records of his own vehicle and was denied the records by police records specialist Dawn VanAckeren.

New York City’s Civilian Complaint Review Board, the watchdog agency that oversees the New York Police Department, consistently touts its independence—“independent agency” is the first descriptor on all of the board’s official communications. The board, which investigates instances of alleged misconduct by officers and votes on whether to recommend discipline, is led by 15 civilian members who, in theory, represent democratic control over the police. But in practice, the department retains control over virtually every step of the civilian review process, even right up to the final one, where t

The Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) project’s newly released Investment Grade Analysis (IGA) reveals that the proposed $15 billion project is a massive waste of public funds. Despite the IBR public relations team’s efforts to spin these results as a “fiscally conservative, worst-case scenario,” the sophisticated, government-required Level 3 data paints a bleak picture of the project’s utility: with a proposed $4.60 toll on I-5, daily traffic will crater from 127,000 vehicle

Climate scientists are retiring a worst-case global warming scenario that has guided research and policy for more than a decade, saying modest gains in the fight against climate change have made the most catastrophic outcome implausible but experts warn the picture is still far from rosy. A new report shows that increasing use of renewable energy has lowered the ceiling on future carbon pollution projections, making the most extreme warming scenario no longer plausible. However, scientists say the gains have not come fast enough to meet the international climate goal set in 2015. Dr. Max Boyko
