EClark_251028_DSC_7772.jpg niclil@boulder… Wed, 05/06/2026 - 09:27 May 06, 2026 A Local Response to a Changing Climate After an unprecedentedly warm and dry winter in Boulder, climate change doesn’t feel abstract. It shows up in wildfire smoke over the foothills, hotter days that stretch later into the evening, and real concerns about energy costs, transportation and community safety. These aren’t distant risks. They’re here, and they’re shaping how we live. While climate change is a global challenge, the pace and scale of our response is defined locally.

(Eli Imadali for Colorado Newsline) Colorado Democrats want to pass a bill in the final days of the state legislative session to offset a potential constitutional amendment on this year’s ballot that would divert revenue to maintain and repair the state’s roads. Lawmakers warn that the initiative would reroute money from priorities like public education and healthcare amid a difficult budget reality. The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling in a Louisiana congressional districting case is one of the most consequential blows to voting rights since 2013, when the court cleared the way for states to enact discriminatory voting restrictions. But for local and state public officials committed to fair representation, the takeaway should not be despair; it should be to act decisively and quickly. The fight has not ended. It has simply moved closer to home. There is much that can and should be done. In the 6–3 decision issued last month in Louisiana v. Callais, the court struck down one of Louisiana

The car is physically present, but administratively it is largely invisible, unlike most other vehicles today where cities have at a minimum mechanisms for them to pay for curb use and receive citations for non-compliance. - The U.S. lags so far behind other global cities on transit that it would cost $4.6 trillion to catch up. For example, Houston is about the same size as Paris, but Paris has 10 times the number of buses and light rail cars per capita. New York City has the best transit system in the U.S., but it’s not as good as Tehran’s. Instead of improving transit, we just build more roads and parking as cities sprawl. (The Guardian) - Often overlooked in the furor over urban highways is the way traffic engineers turned downtown streets into one-way speedways to get car commuters home faster. Cities are no

A proposal to reduce credit card swipe fees has whipped up one of the frothier lobbying fights at the State Capitol this year, pitting the banking industry against retailers, restaurants and other businesses. It passed the legislature Wednesday and now heads to the governor’s desk. Senate Bill 26-134 concerns the interchange fees, or swipe fees, that merchants pay to the banks every time a customer pays with a credit card. Currently, those fees are calculated as a percentage of the total charge, sales tax and all. The proposal, which passed the House on a 45-19 vote, would remove sales taxes f
