Longmont has long prided itself on being ahead of the curve. It was the first city in Colorado to offer municipal broadband, provides the majority of public utilities, and has been a community that has never shied away from embracing what comes next. But in December, residents packed city council chambers and forced a reckoning over surveillance cameras, pushing out one ALPR vendor in Flock and setting off three months of hard conversations about privacy, data and power. Now a new vendor is in, 15 cameras are headed back up, and Longmont finds itself with a chance to prove that being ahead of

On a Sunday in March of 2009, a crane company pulled up to 101 W. Colfax Ave. in downtown Denver. There, a crew worked to remove the large letters reading “Rocky Mountain News” from the building’s facade. A small crowd gathered as a machine lowered the words in three pieces one by one onto a flatbed truck, and that was that. The Rocky had closed, leaving the Denver Post with the remaining nameplate on the 11-floor building that the two rival newspapers had shared as part of a joint operating agreement in one of the nation’s last great newspaper wars. Now, 17 years later, history will repeat it
