Daily Camera Opinion

KEYWORD SCORE: 52.94. air quality, boulder, boulder county, city council, clean energy, colorado, development, energy efficiency, infrastructure, land-use, public works, sustainability, transit

*By Anita Seitz* The topic of transitioning Colorado communities off gas heating has generated controversial headlines following a recent decision by state regulators requiring Xcel Energy to cut climate pollution from its gas system 41% by 2035. Despite Xcel’s own company-wide goal of delivering carbon-free energy by 2050, the utility and its industry partners continue to resist near-term steps to get the company even partway to its commitment. As a former city councilmember and the current Advocacy Director of a coalition of local governments representing more than one-third of Coloradans, I

Members of our Community Editorial Board, a group of community residents who are engaged with and passionate about local issues, respond to the following question: *There is no time for a fresh start like a New Year. Boulder needs some New Year’s resolutions to kick off 2026 on the right foot. Your take?* *Nearly 30 years ago*, when my oldest son was two years old, I was working in my home office when I overheard him say to my wife, “Mama, let’s compromise.” I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at hearing a 2-year-old use the word “compromise.” He would grow up to be brilliant (three degrees

Daily Camera Opinion

KEYWORD SCORE: 32.67. boulder, boulder county, commuter rail, flatiron flyer, transit

Late-night RTD New Year’s service leaves out Flatiron Flyer Recently, RTD announced it would be running late-night service on New Year’s Eve for the light rail and commuter rail networks, as well as on routes 15, 83L and the 16th Street FreeRide. This is fantastic news, and will provide many outside of Boulder County a safe way home, but provides no additional service for the northwest metro. Late-night New Year’s service has been an issue for over a year, and was discussed by the RTD Board in 2024. We too need a way to get home safely from festivities, and we need leadership on the board that

Colorado basketball looks to resume winning ways against Northern Colorado

Daily Camera Boulder News

KEYWORD SCORE: 25.58. boulder, colorado

Tad Boyle has been through the repetitive cycle of the basketball season enough times to know it’s best to soak in the few, fleeting slow moments whenever possible. Boyle did just that this past week as he, along with the entire Colorado men’s basketball team, enjoyed a few days to rest and recover over the holiday. Yet on Christmas night, with the Buffaloes ready to reconvene in Boulder, Boyle retired to his home office to review the video of CU’s pre-break defeat against Stanford. Needless to say, Boyle’s holiday cheer was abruptly buried by lumps of coal. “I wanted our players to enjoy thei

Americans face growing loneliness and social disconnection

Daily Camera Breaking News

KEYWORD SCORE: 22.16. development, pandemic

*By PETER SMITH, Associated Press* It’s been called an “epidemic” of loneliness and isolation. The “bowling alone” phenomenon. By any name, it refers to Americans’ growing social disconnection by many measures. Americans are less likely to join civic groups, unions and churches than in recent generations. They have fewer friends, are less trusting of each other and less likely to hang out in a local bar or coffee shop, recent polling indicates. Given all that, it’s not surprising that many feel lonely or isolated much of the time. Such trends form the backdrop to this Associated Press report o

It’s been 25 years since America decided to save the Everglades. Where do we stand?

Daily Camera Breaking News

KEYWORD SCORE: 21.25. budget, development, housing, infrastructure, traffic

The 20th century was horrible for the Everglades. The broad shallow river, one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet, was labeled wasteland and ruthlessly dammed, carved into parcels, dried out and diverted into near oblivion. But at the end of the century, 25 years ago this month, Democrats and Republicans from Florida and Washington, D.C., joined forces and signed the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan into law. The ambitious 68-project plan was supposed to cost $7.8 billion, it was supposed to take 30 years to complete and it was supposed to save what was left of the Everglades
