In light of recent acts of violence, responding protests and calls to action, we at Chinook Fund pledge solidarity with the #blacklivesmatter movement. Our work is deeply rooted in anti-racist and criminal justice reform efforts across the state and our Giving
Project is creating a large ripple effect as more community members gain awareness, support these movements, and are engaged as donor-activists. Below is a short spotlight on our new grantee, Big Hair, Bigger Dreams, that specifically creates programming for
Black girls in Colorado.
Grantee Spotlight:
Big Hair, Bigger Dreams
Big
Hair, Bigger Dreams is actualizing the dream of eliminating barriers for girls, in particular, young Black women. Big Hair, Bigger Dreams is responding to the critical state of Black girls by providing intensive community outreach and culturally
specific programming that addresses the unique challenges that Black girls face.
We asked their Executive Director, Ginnie Logan, to share some words about the work of Big Hair, Bigger Dreams.

#seedingchange, when Big Hair, Bigger Dreams took the stage!)

Why We Do This Work
Black girls in the United States only compose 17% of the K-12 enrollment, but are 31% of referrals to law enforcement, and 43% of all school related arrests. Although they are arrested more than any other single school demographic, their arrests are for non-violent
offences such as insubordination and are often associated with cultural behaviors such as eye rolling or sassing.
Because Black girls are more likely to be arrested or suspended, 34% of Black girls do not graduate from high school, resulting in 43% of all Black women and girls living in poverty. The poverty that Black women and girls experience results in increased health
disparity, infant mortality, domestic abuse, decreased self-esteem, and the promotion of a vicious cycle. These disparities, contoured by the race, class, and gender, result in an expanding opportunity gap that impacts Black women and girls uniquely and disproportionately.
Big Hair, Bigger Dreams is a girls' leadership development organization that creates opportunities to help Black girls surmount the socio economic and political challenges that uniquely and disproportionally impact them. We provide girls with highly tailored
opportunities today so that they can have a fair shot at accomplishing their dreams tomorrow. We believe that that by addressing the challenges that Black girls face through direct service and ultimately structural interventions we can help to equalize the
playing field for everyone.
Meet Maya
Maya is a Big Hair, Bigger Dreams girl who attends a large high school where she is only one of a handful of Black students. She is bombarded with messages and behaviors that reinforce the practices that lead to the statistics listed above. In her own words,
Maya says “Big Hair, Bigger Dreams not only taught me how to be proud of my hair that breaks all the laws of gravity but they also taught me that my dreams should also break those laws and boundaries, because no matter what I look like I can do anything as
long as I can dream it.”
Chinook Fund helps Big Hair, Bigger Dreams empowers Maya (and girls like her) to be an agent of change in her own life, and interrupts the structures that work against her development. To learn more about the work of Big Hair, Bigger Dreams and girls like Maya,
