We've seen a lot of docks for Windows in our day, and they're usually not very good. We regarded XWindows Dock first with skepticism, then with guarded excitement, and finally with a sense of not being as disappointed as we usually are. But yes, we were still disappointed.
One thing XWindows Dock gets right--to some extent--is the dock's appearance. It comes with icons for My Computer, Control Panel, and Trash, and all three of these are sleek and attractive. Adding other programs to the dock is a bit problematic; the icon for Firefox became pixelated and ugly. Users can set open windows to minimize into the dock, which displays a preview of each open window. Nice in theory, but in practice it's not very attractive. Controlling the dock is even more problematic. It's hard to find the right place to right-click in order to access the preferences, and the preference menus are not intuitive. There are plenty settings, but it's unclear what many of them do. Adjustments to the interface that should have been simple, like having the dock hide and reappear, were confounding. The program has a built-in Help file, but it's brief and vague. We suspect that there's nothing functionally wrong with the program at all, it's just severely lacking in intuitiveness and guidance. Patient users may find that it's not so bad.
XWindows Dock is free. It installs and uninstalls without problems. We recommend this program with reservations; although there's plenty of room for improvement, it's far from the worst dock program we've ever seen.
The final step is to search for the program that you want to uninstall. For most programs you will not need to download a program to remove it, because the program will just unload the files that were used while the application was active. However if you want to remove XWindows Dock from your start menu, then you will need to download a program called XoftSpy to remove the files that are in there. Download this program to get rid of the program forever and start using a new start menu. The steps above were how to uninstall XWindows Dock, the same steps that you need to do to remove any virus that might be on your windows 8 machine.
Hi, I'm looking for some app that will make dock on my Windows 10 similar to that one which is on Mac. I've been using rocketdock but it was bugged for me :(I also tested objectdock but it wasn't working properly too, same situation was with Winstep Nexus it was freezing sometimes when I was using it :/
XWindows Dock is a Portable Windows Dock which is similar to the Mac OS Dock that allows placing shortcuts easily by dragging and dropping onto the dock which can also be resized as any windows in the Windows OS on the desktop.
The icons of applications on the dock can be changed by right clicking on the application icon on the dock, and select properties, next just drag and drop the replacement icon into the icon replacement area or over the existing icon. The description to the icon can also be changed and working directory and arguments if the programs accepts can also be set.
Another very handy feature of XWindows Dock is Exposé which lets users browse through your opened applications and windows but this feature works only on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Just click the icon of running application and wait (or use Alt+Click) to show all windows of a application.
When you have opened XWindows Dock, the dock should be at the bottom of the desktop as in the shot below. To add more shortcuts to it, drag and drop desktop icons onto the dock. Start menu shortcuts can also be dragged onto the dock.
XWindows Dock es un menú de inicio que se inspira a la vez en el dock de Mac y en las alternativas existentes para Windows. Al lado de opciones típicas, como separadores y ocultación automática, XWindows Dock reserva muchas sorpresas.
This new version has really impressed me. The settings are easy to navigate it took me 5 minutes to customise the dock to my liking, the live icon reflections have saved me hours of downloading and editing, and having the OSX(ish) background bundled with it has really saved me a lot of work. Not to mention it has the best support for Windows 7 than any other dock in this list.
Nexus dock worked perfectly with my system I had no performance issues with it at all, and it also had the live icon reflections and bundled backgrounds. It also came with some fairly good docklets. It is a powerful dock and should not be taken lightly.
Ok so the bad about this dock is that the settings are hard to navigate especially if you have never used a dock before. Also the load on the system at times can be heavy so its something you might want to avoid if you are using a netbook or slow computer.
XWindows Dock is a great alternate for those who are new to using docks on Windows. It has live icon reflections and easy ways to import skins and docklets, it also has great quality icons with live icon reflections. The graphics engine it uses is also very light on the system. The settings are easy to navigate.
However, it does not support minimising Windows to the dock, it does not have a reserve edge of screen feature. It also has not been updated in quite some time. So whether this project has been abandoned remains to be seen.
I am going to say all these docks have their good and bad points, personally I like using either ObjectDock or Nexus Dock. If you have any docks you would like to share please feel free to leave them in the comments.
Overall StarDock have made very welcomed improvements to the dock. The live icon reflections work really well and the icon quality is amazing. However with new improvements there are new problems. Once such problem is that the dock when using the zoom effect it seems to slow the whole system down, and when minimising Windows to the Dock the minimise animation is slow and very laggy and impacts the performance of the whole system.
Then open Styler menu and from there hide menu in explorer! You can also enable windows shadow effect from there. Just check Desktop tab. This is what you should get at the end! Install XWindows Dock for full Leopard experience and even more.
