Hello,

I was recently talking with some folks at work and the topic of Ruby
theater night, or the lack thereof, came up. To make a long story
short, if there is interest, BBN is willing to host, provide pizza,
drinks, and let us use a nice projector.

Are people interested in reviving theater night? If we held it, would
you come?

thanks,
Paul

BBN is about a 10 minutes walk from Alewife, right on the 78 bus line
from Harvard Square, and about a 10 minute walk from Alewife. There is
also plenty of free off street parking.

I loved the Ruby theatre nights and attended most of them. The
quality screencasts + discussions among other developers meant that I
always left there smarter. :)

Leaving someplace smarter than when I came in is definitely something I should do more often. (Heck, one could even argue that there's a first time for everything. ;-)

Sounds like a good idea to me,

I'd definitely be interested. Theatre night has been a nice way of keeping up with new techniques/technologies and then discussing how the implementation might work in practice.

Hi Paul,

Sounds like a theater night could be fun, what exactly did you have in
mind?

I'd definitely be interested in attending.  Loved them when they were happening before.
And I'm pretty sure I can do that location.
Bring 'em back! :-)

What we've been doing is watch screencasts together (Remi's Rack
screencasts, Pragmatic Programmers screencasts, Rails Envy
screencasts, PeepCode screencasts). Then we discuss them.

I do believe we've also tossed around the idea of Ruby street
theatre. I like the idea of miming Why's (poignant) Guide to Ruby in
the middle of Harvard Square. I think people would totally get it.

Talking to Sean it sounded like in the past people proposed a few
videos and then we'd put up a voting page sometime before the meeting
and then watch the winner.

I actually don't have any thoughts on the video selection. If we go
with the 3rd Tuesday we have a bit of time to figure it out as we just
missed this month's 3rd Tuesday.

Are there things out there that people really want to see of something
that you've seen that was really excellent?

I would love to see theatre night reborn! It's a great way for those
peripherally interested in Ruby to get their feet wet without the
intimidation of a hackfest. I attended one session before and I
thought it was great.

I'd LOVE to go! But Tuesday nights are bad.

I know it's cool to say there's something going on every Tuesday of
the month, but how many folks would appreciate another night? Show of
hands? Anyone? Bueller?

Best,
Liana Leahy

It used to be the 4th Tuesday, but now that the 3rd is open as well (no BetaHouse hackfests?), it's not like all Tuesdays are spoken for anyway.
On the assumption that the next month or so is kind of a mess on many levels for people, it might be worth postponing a firm day-of-the-month decision.
The new year brings new schedules for all kinds of things.

+1 on a night other than Tuesday.  It's the *only* day of the week that I have a pretty consistent conflict.

Although Tuesday nights are fine with me, if we always hold all of our Ruby meetings on Tuesday nights we may systematically cut out a portion of Boston's Rubyists from ever attending.  That said, I know that if I keep my Tuesday nights free, I am available to attend any Ruby group event because they're always on Tuesday nights.

Here's a suggestion:  alternate between Tuesday and Thursday nights for Ruby Theater Night.

I would appreciate another night, as I'm teaching "Intro to Java" at the
Cambridge Center on Tuesday nights. But, I'm also taking a jQuery class
there on Wednesdays as well.

I realize it can be a hassle trying to accommodate even a small group of
people, so whatever works best for the organizers (and BBN) is fine with
me. I'll just start showing up after my classes are over.

In the meantime, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

As far as I know either night should work here. There's not a lot of
space contention in the evenings. There seems to be enough interest to
make it worthwhile, it's now just a question of when. As noted, the
4th week in December is a particularly bad time and we could
commandeer the 3rd week of December or just start in January.

How's this for a plan? If you think you may come and have a problem
with one or the other of the 15th or 17th send me a mail off-list and
on Monday I'll find out about availability and send out a note with
the results.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Paul

After looking through the notes it seems like December is tough in
general with family commitments and such. In order to send this thing
off with a bang lets shoot for a January start. I haven't heard back
regarding availability but should soon and will use that to set a
date. There was not really a Tuesday/Thursday consensus. Lets check
availability and go from there. More soon.

thanks,
Paul
