to Boston Ruby Group
The company I work for is going to be staffing up a small US development office in pretty short order. Our current target for an office is in the Maynard area. This could change depending on candidates but we are certainly not looking to lease space in or around Boston/Cambridge. If you're a Rails developer with solid experience and interest in this, drop me an email.

Senior Software Engineer

Description

Background

Faria Education Group specialises in building and operating software systems for use in international education. The main products are ManageBac and OpenApply . We are a remote-first company that values diverse teams. The worldwide technical team behind these products are spread between Taiwan, United States and Ukraine. We have additional technical staff in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada.

We now have an excellent opportunity for the right person to build an additional North America-based team to handle targeted development tasks across a variety of our products. This is a team lead position that includes assembling a team with three other developers and coordinating their work to deliver high-quality, fully-tested code on a demanding timescale. You will have substantial autonomy coupled with substantial responsibility.

Currently we are a Ruby on Rails shop, though you may have the chance to explore additional technologies as our systems mature. We use a variety of other software in production including Rails, Redis, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Memcached, and more.

Role Description

This is a high-level, full-time, in-office position. We are a remote-first company but as lead for this new team you will be expected to assemble your team in one location for coordinated work. We expect you to be able to contribute to the development of high-quality software solutions and to efficiently manage your team to provide value throughout the company.

You should already be experienced with web development using Ruby on Rails, and have experience using and creating API solutions. You will need to quickly grasp existing code, and contribute to codebases with respect for the processes of existing teams. We also value high-quality UI/UX work that matches our emphasis on customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Break down feature epics into individual tasks and distribute those tasks efficiently
  • Implement new features in applications across our suite.
  • Implement UI/UX specs from our design team.
  • Ensure high-quality fully-tested code is committed to shared repositories.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues, suggest and implement solutions.
  • Work effectively with other teams worldwide.

Communication

Because we are a global company, effective communication is essential:

  • Communicate with other parts of Faria Education Group including product teams, QA, design, support and marketing.
  • Proper remote presence & etiquette through Slack, BaseCamp, GitHub and other systems.
  • Adherence to operating procedures with timely followups to avoid surprises and dropped work.
  • You will report directly to the VP of Engineering.

Location and Hours

This is a full-time job. We expect to locate our new office in a mid-sized US or Canadian city with a good population of Rails developers to draw on. Please consider your readiness and ability to help recruit for the team when applying. Office hours are not fixed, but we expect you to establish core office hours for your team.

Because of the global nature of our business, you should also be prepared for conference calls outside of business hours. Potential emergency situations can call for support at any hour, though we work hard to minimize those situations.

*Please note: Due to a high volume of applicants, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.*

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4+ years writing web applications in Ruby on Rails. Rails 5 experience a plus.
  • Good working knowledge of Ruby and JavaScript.
  • Experience with managing a small development team
  • Experience with source code control via Git and GitHub.
  • Experience with code quality and continuous integration tools.
  • Experience with remote work

Benefits

  • Salary negotiable, expected range USD 100K-120K/year
  • Performance bonus tied to meeting key deliverables and milestones
  • Health insurance (US)
  • Company-supplied laptop (Retina MacBook Pro or other)

  • Books ("unlimited within reason") and conference attendance budget. We expect you to have a plan for professional development.
  • Remote-first environment with shared workspace
