On Twitter, just curious, not a serious need.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a twitter client for Ubuntu?

8 matches for "^[0-9]+\." in buffer: charles' regex for twitter client
34:1. Twitux (download)
38:2. gTwitter (download)
42:3. Spaz (download)
46:4. Twhirl (download)
50:5. TwitterFox (download)
54:6. Twitter Deskbar (download)
58:7. Twitter Terminal
68:8. Alert Thingy (download)

Also, why might is it better to use a client?

Are there other web based interfaces to twitter and what are there
merits?

TweetDeck runs on Adobe Air so you could run that.

For a web based client - I don't use one but I've heard good things about Seesmic and TweetHive. I personally prefer a client.

I use Gwibber when I am on Ubuntu. It has the benefit of being in the
default Ubuntu repos and it looks like there have ben significant
improvements in the version that ships with 9.10.

It *really* depends on what you use Twitter for.

I use it to track a number of people in a variety of technology sectors.

For my needs, Tweetdeck is awesome.  Instructions for installing it on Ubuntu are here:

http://www.technixupdate.com/install-tweetdeck-on-ubuntu-linux/

It allows you to define groups, each in their own pane, so you can read them with the priority and frequency you want and aren't constantly getting a single stream of a zillion updates.  I have panes for Java, OSX, PowerShell, etc.

If you're just using it to track a few of your friends, this is total overkill, so again it depends on what you use it for.

I use Tweetdeck too, but only for the nifty "twrrp!" sound.

Actually, it's not bad although the panes concept doesn't work as well as I thought it might.  If I have up "All friends", "Mentions", and "Direct Messages", there's only room for one more pane, so I tend to just use that area for ad-hoc searches.  If I was following groups I think I might find it frustrating.  Is this just me?

I'm confused.

I have 6 panes open on my desktop, and 4 on my iPhone.

How is there 'not enough room' ?

Weird.  I guess my monitor isn't big enough?

I could certainly have more panes, but I'm a I-like-to-have-it-visible-all-the-time kind of guy, and they'd be off to the right.

I thought you could change the width of each column...

Wide/narrow, yes.  Guess I'm just used to wide...

Then what's the point of running Tweetdeck?

Its whole raison d'etre is multiple columns.
