Hey Beautiful puppeteers!

I would love to talk with anyone that has adapted written published works for puppetry and perhaps worked with an estate instead of the living artist?
A few questions:
1. Timeframe: what is an acceptable timeframe for making this happen? The MOU gives 3 years for development.
2. Performing rights: when you developed your piece, did you have to get separate permission to perform?
3. Money: Money is not mentioned in super detail as far as a percentage of ticket sales?  What’s acceptable? I was very upfront about the performances being free for the most part audiences. But thinking about different venues or tiers of royalties might be helpful.

Will gladly talk further about it but looking for any and all advice/experience you can provide.

Thanks!
~Tanya

Howdy Tanya,

I would reach out to Chat Williams of Wonderspark! and maybe have a coffee with him while he is in town? He and Z. Briggs adapted one of their shows from a book called "Chicken Soup, Chicken Soup" and they have some sort of licensing agreement with the publisher.

When it comes to Creative Licensing, I have been looking into this myself, because the upfront costs are pretty pricey. But, with Honey Goodenough, I have a deal with her that every Word Play show, I send Honey a $130 check as a licensing fee. We've kept it at that rate for two years, but I'm starting to wonder if that should change year to year...

Hope this train of thought is helpful as you go!
Call me if you wanna chat it through.

Best,
Sarah
