Hello, Boston Puppeteers!
Let me introduce myself — my name is Yasna!
My husband, our children, and I are immigrants from Russia / Ukraine.
Back in our home countries, we spent many years developing our own project — a visual theatre called Svetlitsa.
Our main focus was street theatre and performances in illuminated costumes. These were fairy-tale-like, non-verbal stories where the primary language was light, movement, and visual imagery.
As is often the case in the theatre world, we did everything ourselves — from designing and making costumes and sets to directing and staging the performances.
After moving to the U.S., we lived in Los Angeles for several years, working as artists and fabricators in a scenic shop.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to relaunch our theatre during that time — most of our energy went into adapting, raising our children, and making a living.
Just recently, we relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, and now we dream of breathing new life into our project — in a new context, with new audiences, and hopefully new collaborators.
I understand that Boston is far away, but I truly believe in the power of creative communities.
I know that the real network of artists, puppeteers, and street performers reaches far and wide, and inspiring connections can happen regardless of distance.
We would love to meet like-minded people, make new friends, and find kindred spirits.
If you’re open to sharing any information — about how things work here in the world of independent theatre, festivals, projects, venues, or opportunities for artists — we would be deeply grateful.
We’re especially eager to connect with those working in street theatre, puppetry, visual and performance art.
If you have a moment, I’d be very happy to chat — feel free to write when it’s convenient for you.
Warmly,
Yasna
