As a nube to Boston, I'm not sure which beaches are cool and which ones are crazy. General opinion- what beaches do you guys go to accessible by train?

For years I swore off Revere Beach, thinking it a litter-covered pit of despair covered with the likes of the Jersey Shore cast. Then I actually went there.

While you may run into a few characters, I found it to be clean and actually quite beautiful! Great views, decent water, acceptable facilities. It's accessible from the blue line, which is great! This week is the giant sand castle competition, so hopefully if you go, you get to see them (before the storm!).

For more of an adventure, you can get a bus to Southie (I can't remember the beach name but it's near Castle island). You can also get a bus to Crane Beach in Ipswich.

Southie isn't the cleanest beach, and it's the Boston Harbor, which is not historically the cleanest water, but I swam there when I lived in Southie and never had any qualms about it. Not to talk you out of it! It's just very much a city beach.

There's also Singing Beach in Manchester-By-the-Sea, which is accessible by commuter rail: http://www.manchester.ma.us/pages/manchesterma_recreation/sbdirections

Seconding Revere Beach! And you should go this weekend, because like Beth said, the sand sculptures are amazing!

Also, an awesome semi-T-accessible day trip that we do every summer is heading out to the Harbor Islands. You have to take a ferry out there (from the Aquarium stop), but the beaches are nice and the Islands are gorgeous!
