Hi BABA beeks,

We have a great opportunity to hear from amazing beekeeper Megan Mahoney this eve👇

Megan's the real deal. She fell for bees as a first year college student in UMN volunteering in Marla Spivak's lab. She worked for Bee Informed the year it began, and has raised queens for breeders in north Cal and for a group attempting to raise a Varroa resistant cultivar in Hawaii (using artificial insemination).

More recently she's also been doing commercial beekeeping in a big way, running over 1,000 colonies from Texas to the Dakotas.

Megan is a wealth of information!

Hands-On

Queen School TODAY!

Who's Hosting?

Me (Ang) and Bi will be hosting and making sure you have everything you need.  Camping will be available on site for participants who need it.

SO MANY Snacks will be provided.

As you can see, we love snacks.

We'll host fires on Saturdays so we can chill together fire side and

share stories.

Quiet reflection spaces will be set up for when folks need a break.

We steward 20 acres of river adjacent land in Western Mass (Pocomtuc, Nipmuc land) where all of this will bee happening.

We want you to bring your whole self to the space, feel a sense of belonging and joy, share your stories, connect to the place, land, and plants where we are while you build bee community!

To help you feel grounded we'll bee sure to send all participants details about what to bring, when to arrive, how to prepare, what to expect, where to park and MORE!

What about COVID?

We want to keep each other safe.

All our learning will be outdoors and/or under a big ole tent to keep it

safe & breezy.  COVID safety protocols will be responsive to the case rates locally & regionally.  We will share asks about testing, masking and food sharing before each weekend so we can all breathe easy knowing we're keeping each other safe in these uncharted times.

Need a Scholarship?  Travel Stipend?

We've got you!  Just fill out the application form and tell us how we can support.  Our "pay what you can" program design helps us make sure class is accessible to all and helps offset costs for folks who need it.

As first generation farmers and apiculturalists accessibility is a priority for us!

--

We've (hopefully) thought of it all with the help of our all-star advisors.  AND it is our first year so we'll probably be learning together, and asking for your grace and kindness as we do.

We'll have lots of hands on help (stay tuned to hear more about our teaching assistants in the next newsletter!) to make sure you feel at home

and have what you need.

When Is It Again?

Each class kicks off Friday evening 5:30-7:30 pm with team building & hands on work.

Then we'll be in the field all day Saturday 9:00- 5:30, with breaks for lunch and snacks of course.  Option to hang out for a fire Saturday night too!

Sunday we'll wrap up with lessons from 9:00-11:30 am.

Check out a sketch of our Schedule here and dates on the flyer below.

Who Are The Teachers Though?

Our Guest list is FULL of rad queen breeders

from across the continent. You can read about ALL of them in the syllabus.

Here's two MORE featured teachers of the week--

Bzz! Tucka Saville AKA Tucka Bee runs 300 colonies in Upstate NY and South Florida. Her primary mentors are Mike Palmer in upstate Vermont and Sam Comfort, creator of the Comfort Hive. Tucka produces about 1000 queens per year, plus some honey and wax. Tucka also enjoy standing in swarms, swimming in rivers, and long days queen-catching with my pup in the sun. It's a pirate's life with bees! Zzb!

Based out of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Michelle runs Moral Bees.  Michelle's mission is to improve honeybee health and the overall success of local and northern beekeepers. By offering hygienic queens and survivor stocks mated at higher elevations she aims to help reduce beekeepers dependence on chemicals and overall losses. Preferring to sell her queens locally she makes them available for pick up fresh out of the hive and weekly to her local bee supply store, Honey and the Hive in Weaverville, NC.
