Director/Senior Lecturer:
The Writing, Rhetoric & Professional Communication program (WRAP) within Comparative Media Studies/Writing section at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites applications for the Director position, appointed as a Senior Lecturer, with an expected start date of July 1, 2025. This is a 12-month position, with an initial appointment for three years, renewable based on positive performance reviews.
Responsibilities:
The Director is responsible for hiring, mentoring, and supervising WRAP lecturers, for integrating communication instruction into courses across disciplines, collaborating with WRAP lecturers, and for ongoing program assessment and the strategic planning of new WRAP initiatives. The Director co-develops the WRAP budget annually and oversees the development and implementation of writing assessments for incoming first-year and graduate students. The Director serves as a member of Writing Council and works with several campus groups involved in writing instruction and in MIT's communication requirement, including the MIT Subcommittee on the Communication Requirement and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. The Director's responsibilities include teaching two courses per year.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. required in one of the following: Scientific and Technical Writing, Rhetoric, Composition Studies, or a related field. Must have substantial experience working with STEM students and curriculum, leadership experience in writing and/or speaking programs, substantial administrative and teaching experience, active involvement in Writing- Across-the-Curriculum or Communication-Across-the-Curriculum movements with knowledge of current theories and best practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as a director or assistant director of a composition program or a writing-across-the-curriculum program is highly desirable.
