Dear BAWCA colleagues,

We hope you’ve been enjoying your summer. We’re excited to be having our summer in-person meeting in just a couple weeks at Tufts (thanks, Kristina, for hosting us!).

Thursday, July 11

2:00pm – 4:00pm

Tufts University

Topic: Addressing the Political Climate on Campus

In the spring, many of us saw protests on our campuses. In the fall, we’ll see what’s shaping up to be another politically and emotionally charged presidential election. We’d take this meeting to discuss how (or if) our writing centers responded to the events of the past year, how we might respond to similar future situations, and how we prepare our centers for discussions about these kinds of issues.

As a starting point for our BAWCA meeting, we’re attaching Mandy Suhr-Sytsma and Shan-Estelle Brown’s 2011 article “Theory In/To Practice: Addressing the Everyday Language of Oppression in the Writing Center.” If you have the time, it’s a good read, and we’ll use it as a springboard into our discussion, but even if you don’t get to it, we hope you’ll join us anyway!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Hi everyone! We hope you all had a great long weekend. Just a quick reminder that we're having our summer in-person meeting this Thursday from 2-4pm at Tufts.

Here's some arrival information:

The meeting with take place at Tisch Library, in the Austin Conference Room, room 226.

T and Parking at Tufts:

Visitor Parking is available in the Dowling Hall (Public Safety) parking garage at 419 Boston Ave. To get to the library from the parking garage, take the elevator to the 7th floor, turn to your right and go through the lobby to the outside door, which leads to a bridge. Cross the bridge and walk across the quad in the direction of the stone church (Goddard Chapel). There are steps to the left of the church that lead down to the front entrance of Tisch Library.

Taking the T:

Green Line: Tufts stop (end of the E line). To get to the library, turn left upon existing the station and go to the stop light. Cross the street away from the station. You’ll be on College Ave. Walk past the big Memorial Steps and turn right onto Professors Row. Tisch Library will be on the right, behind the iron fence (there’s a clear entrance a little way up the road).

Red Line: Davis Square/Tufts stop. Tufts is about a 15-minute walk from the station – go straight up College Ave. When you get to campus, turn left onto Professors Row and Tisch Li Library will be on the right, behind the iron fence (there’s a clear entrance a little way up the road).

Bus from Harvard or Davis: The 96 and 94 buses both stop at Tufts. The closest bus stop is Professors Row.

Getting to the Austin Room:

Walk into the main entrance of Tisch Library. As soon as you go through the doors, turn right and you’ll see the Hirsch Reading Room. To the right of that room, there’s another door to the admin offices and Austin Room. It will feel like you turned almost completely around. If you can’t find it, we’ll be on the lookout, plus the library staff at the circulation desk can help!

Thanks again to Kristina for hosting, and we're looking forward to seeing you Thursday!

Hi all!

It was great to see some of you at Tufts yesterday! I mentioned this new group being convened by one of my professors at Northeastern--the first event is in two weeks at the Yardhouse; it's on a Thursday evening.

I never make time for these kinds of things, but Alex Fronduto is amazing. I'm actually figuring out childcare so I can make it to this! In case you're interested in networking (if you have an open position, if you're thinking of your next step, etc)--OR, if you're interested in connecting with other higher ed folks about best practices and new research, this should be really fun.

Maybe I'll see some of you there!

Best,
JoJo
