Hi friends,

We will still be meeting on Tuesday, July 15 at 2 PM; however, we will be meeting once again at Tufts University, rather than at Suffolk. We’ll be in the StAAR Multipurpose room (Tisch 127, directions below). We look forward to seeing you all and having our conversation on hospitality in the writing center!

Best,

Jamie & Greg

T and Parking at Tufts:

Visitor Parking is available in the Dowling Hall (Public Safety) parking garage at 419 Boston Ave., Medford. To get to the library from the parking garage, take the elevator to the 7th floor, turn to your right and go through the lobby to the outside door, which leads to a bridge. Cross the bridge and walk across the quad in the direction of the stone church (Goddard Chapel). There are steps to the left of the church that lead down to the front entrance of Tisch Library.

Green Line: Tufts stop (end of the E line). To get to the library, turn left upon existing the station and go to the stop light. Cross the street away from the station. You’ll be on College Ave. Walk past the big Memorial Steps and turn right onto Professors Row. Tisch Library will be on the right, behind the iron fence (there’s a clear entrance a little way up the road).

Red Line: Davis Square/Tufts stop. Tufts is about a 15-minute walk from the station – go straight up College Ave. When you get to campus, turn left onto Professors Row and Tisch Library will be on the right, behind the iron fence (there’s a clear entrance a little way up the road).

Bus from Harvard or Davis: The 96 and 94 buses both stop at Tufts. The closest bus stop is College Ave @Professors Row. If coming from the direction of Harvard/Davis, cross the street after exiting the bus, then walk up Professors Row and Tisch Library will be on the right, behind the iron fence (there’s a clear entrance a little way up the road).

Getting to Tisch Room 127 (StAAR Multipurpose Room):

Walk into the main entrance of Tisch Library and walk forward until you see a large staircase on the right going down. Stay to the right when going down the stairs, then turn left at the bottom of the stairs and walk through the swinging doors. Walk straight ahead through the stacks and you will pretty much walk right into the room. If you get lost, either follow the red StAAR Center signs or ask the library staff at the circulation desk!

Hi folks!

I hope everyone's semester finished up without too much fuss. I just wanted to reach out and encourage you to save the date for our summer BAWCA meeting:

Hospitality in the Writing Center

Tuesday, July 15

2:00pm - 4:00pm

Suffolk University

We'll send send directions as we get closer, but I hope you'll be able to join us. I've attached and article that might provide a useful springboard into our conversation. We look forward to discussing how, as the article's author, Edward English, puts it "hospitality--as a disposition--might bring about more positive, generative and encouraging outcomes in writing center work." We can also use this opportunity to consider "what responsible and ethical use of power and authority might look like...particularly when [tutors work] outside their disciplines and with multilingual students."

I hope to see you all in July!

Best,

Greg

Hi everyone,
It was great to see some of you in person yesterday! We had a great discussion about hospitality, and I wanted to follow up with a few resources in case anyone else was interested.

I'm attaching three documents, all of which are more about hospitality in the writing classroom more than in writing centers. But I looked at all of them and while I did't agree with everything, I found them worthwhile reads.
  • Haswell and Haswell's Chapters 3 and 5 from Hospitality and Authoring (2015). These are the two chapters that English mentions assigning to his students in his article.
  • Haswell, Haswell, and Blalock's earlier (2009) article, "Hospitality in College Composition Courses" about the topic.

I hope you all have a fantastic rest of the summer!
