Hello everybody, hope you're all doing well, and welcome to my classic game review of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts! This game has always fascinated me, even when I was a kid I really wanted to love this series, but it was just too damn difficult for me to make any real progress in. It combines two of my favorite things, videogames, and all the various themes of Halloween. The ghosts, the zombies, the monsters, the creepy atmosphere, these are all aspects of the game that I enjoy very much, and now that I'm older I didn't have nearly as much trouble making progress as I did back in the day. In fact, although some parts were still pretty tough, I actually had a lot of fun playing this again, beating it for the first time. Now I can definitely say that this is a great game, and can finally give it a proper review.

All of these games have the same basic premise, you play as the knight Arthur, on a quest to save the Princess from a demon who snatches her away in the opening sequence. Now you have to make your way through various levels filled with zombies, ghosts, monsters, and demons, beating a tough boss at the end of each one. The difficulty comes from the gameplay mechanics that aren't ever explained to you at the beginning. You start off in a regular suit of armor, if you get hit once you lose the armor, if you get hit again you die. That's it, all the game allows you is two direct hits before you die. You can find upgrades for your armor, but they don't give you more defensive protection, instead they upgrade your offensive abilities, which can make all the difference.

That said, I still find it hard to recommend Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection to anyone but the most devoted Ghosts 'n Goblins fans; for most Switch players, I suspect the design and gameplay will be too much to overcome. This feels a little like one of those "could" versus "should" scenarios. Maybe just let sleeping ghouls and ghosts lie.

Sounds scary, doesn't it? That's what it is. A demon has kidnapped the knight's, that is your, girl. So he gets started to free her. The demon doesn't look at it deedlessly, but he sends all kinds of gloomy creatures towards him: zombies, ghosts, demons and even shooting carnivores.
You need to fight yourself through four rather different levels, which are each devided into two parts. The passage from one part to the next is guarded by a weaker demon (death bird), which needs to be defeated with three hits. To get to a higher level, you need to defeat a strong demon (Ork or dragon), which guards the key to the door. At the end awaits you as a guard of the girl a big Chinese dragon.
Further game elements are new weapons, that you find in your search, as well as the time limit (2:59 minutes) which needs to be kept in every level. If the knight is hit by an enemy, he will lose its armour. Now he is invulnerable for a few seconds, but then the next hit will kill him fully and the current part must be started again.

Command heroic knight Sir Arthur on a quest to defeat the forces of evil and save kidnapped princess Prin Prin. Scores of evil enemies awaits you, from zombies to gargoyles, ghosts to demons on your journey to save her. Will you survive the perils that lie in haunted countryside of demon world?

Started playing on C64 at my cousins' around '86, then I finally got my C128 in 1988 and I was hooked since then. Used to read italian Zzap! and regularly traded games with schoolmates and with my cousins. SID music greatly influenced my passion for music in general and it's the sound of my childhood. I still love to play old games on the real hardware, it brings me back to happier times but I also keep up to date with new releases. I like retrogaming in general but C64/128 is still my favourite system by a long shot. It's just magic!
