I run a MacBook Pro 15" with macOS Sierra and 4GB of memory. 'CleanMyMac X' tells me that I am running out of both physical and virtual memory which perhaps explains why the Mac has been running very slowly for a number of months.

How old is this machine? If it is 2012 or before, then you may be able to upgrade it. You can upgrade the memory chips to get more physical memory. You can upgrade the hard drive to an SSD to get more, and faster, virtual memory.

Looooooong story short, I ended up using a github script to setup a macosx in virtualbox on my pc, messed around with USB settings, and learned how to put the m1 in DFU mode (which is easily the hardest part of this whole process). I restored my macbook pro after about 32 attempts.

While there are technologies (QEMU) that let you emulate intel instructions on an ARM chip, the analogy there is that one is in english and the other in spanish - but you can only translate them by going through morse code in the middle. That's really slow and cumbersome, to the point where the virtual machine is unusable.

Technogeezer has written an excellent guide on creating a new Windows 11 VM - it's pinned in the documents section for the Fusion forum. Highly recommended to follow it. If at all possible, get an ISO from uuddump rather than the pre-made virtual machine, as the former won't expire.

I am working on a document on mac (osx 10.9) and I have a virual machine running windows 7 - the issue is I dont know how to enable it so I can copy text from the word document in mac to the word document or application in the virtual box.

You can't officially run macOS (and by extension Xcode) on non-Apple hardware. If you do, you basically are going rogue. If you plan on developing for the platform officially (submitting apps to the App Stores) I recommend you invest in a Mac. Maybe you'll get away with it by running macOS on a virtual machine, maybe you won't. Maybe they will notice that you are not on Mac and turn a blind eye, but then again, maybe they won't. If Apple chooses to enforce its rules, they may kick you out of the dev program and you will have wasted your time.

I have Apple Remote Desktop and am connecting from a different Mac, but it's the same - just the single, physical screen. Is it possible to have a second "virtual" screen when remoted into your Mac, like you can with Windows RDP? If so, how can I set this up?

A program named BetterDummy can create virtual displays similar to how a dummy HDMI dongle would create a virtual display. That should also work as a display accessible when using VNC. However, I have not actually tried this solution.

Orka Workspace is for developers, testers, creators, contractors, and for company IT seeking to effectively deploy Macs in their business. The idea is that it becomes possible to equip temporary workforces with a virtual Mac.

For many years, VMware Fusion was in lock-step with Parallels Desktop, with the two rivals releasing regular updates and competing for the top spot in the Mac virtualization market. In recent years, though, VMware seems to have taken its foot off the pedal and has allowed Fusion to fall behind a bit (in fact, you actually have to dig around quite a bit simply to find Fusion on VMware website these days).

Windows 365 (which launched in July 2021) has the potential to really challenge traditional virtualization programs such as Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion. However, at the moment, Windows 365 is still pretty expensive and is very much aimed at large corporate users, rather than the individuals and smaller businesses that tend to use Parallels and Fusion.

Using dual-boot rather than virtualization technology, Boot Camp provides the best performance for Intel-based Macs that need to run Windows. (As we explained above, M1/M2-based Macs do not offer Boot Camp).

VirtualBox, in version 7.0.6 since January 2023, is a bit of a mixed bag. Like Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion, it allows you to create a virtual machine that can run Windows and Windows apps from within macOS itself.

"Now with EC2 Mac instances, I can spin up a new virtual machine in minutes, improve security by using EC2 Instance Profiles, and create, test, and roll-out a new Xcode AMI across all of our build agents 4x faster. These speed improvements enabled us to reduce our macOS fleet size by 50%."

If you're running a virtual machine on your Mac using Parallels Desktop, you may experience some performance issues that can make the virtual machine run slower than you'd like. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to improve your virtual machine's performance.

Virtual machine performance is directly related to a computer's hardware resources. It is also very important to allocate even shares of hardware resources between the host operating system (macOS) and guest (virtual machine) according to the recommended system requirements of both systems.

Note: Parallels Desktop for Mac has a cool feature: CPU Usage Monitor. Look at the virtual machine's window tray, and the CPU Usage Monitor will light up in red when CPU usage in Windows is above 70%. Click on CPU Usage monitor to see what processes in Windows use the computer's CPU. Clicking on a process name will open Windows Task Manager, showing the selected process:

Note: starting with Parallels Desktop 17, we advise using the Automatic Resource Manager feature. Parallels Desktop 17 evaluates your Mac hardware before starting a virtual machine to allocate as many resources as needed to provide a better out-of-the-box experience (OOBE) for our users. When deploying a virtual machine to various different Mac hardware, this new feature helps to ensure that your users will get the best possible experience with Windows on their Macs.

Users who rarely make use of their virtual machines may encounter slowness and other performance issues after starting a virtual machine if it hasn't been used for a long time. Our recommendation is for users to wait for some time to enable Windows to complete necessary internal jobs and other required maintenance tasks. If Windows still exhibits slow performance, check Task Manager as described below to find out the reason for high CPU consumption.

The virtual machine's CPU consumption directly depends on guest operating system usage. If you notice that your virtual machine consumes a high amount of CPU resources, check the CPU consumption in the guest operating system in Task Manager (right-click on Windows taskbar > Task Manager):

Once you determine the Windows program process responsible for consuming a sufficient amount of CPU, you may refer to the software manufacturer's knowledge base to find more information about the process and the consequence of disabling the process. You can take a snapshot (Actions > Take a snapshot) of the virtual machine to stay on the safe side and disable the top process, e.g. you can follow the steps from this article to disable the Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry service shown in the screenshot above. For some types of software, like video or photo editing, CAD, or video games, high CPU usage is a common operating condition.

In order to run Kali, we will need some virtualization software first. While there are many options to choose from, such as those from VMware, I like to use Oracle's VirtualBox, which can be downloaded from its website for free. This is what I'll be using in this guide.

Needs vary. Running in live mode is acceptable, but in some cases, you will be working on files on the VM and you want persistence. This is why I opted to create a virtual hard disk. Once you are satisfied with your option, click the "Create" button.

Since I opted to create a new virtual hard disk, I have some more work to do. I selected the VDI file type because I'm not really concerned about compatibility with other virtualization software. If you need compatibility with other virtualization software, you will need to select the appropriate file type for the virtualization software. When you are satisfied with your selection, click the "Continue" button.

Next, we need to decide the size of the hard disk. I am going to allot 15 GB to my virtual drive. Kali Linux requires a minimum of 10 GB of space, so 15 should allow me wiggle room. You will also need to select the location to save your virtual hard disk. This can be done by clicking on the folder icon by the "Name" field. I usually keep mine in the Documents folder, though, it doesn't really matter where you put it. Once you are finished, click the "Create" button.

Start the virtual machine by selecting the Kali Linux VM, and then clicking on the green "Start" button. You will be prompted to select your Kali install media. Click on the small folder icon and navigate to your Kali ISO that you downloaded in Step 2 above. Once it is selected, click the "Start" button.

hello, will the Alfa AWUS036NHA adapter work considering that I am using Kali through a virtual machine on a mac? I know some people had problems... if this adapter won't work, can you suggest me a good one to use through a virtual machine on a mac?

Jason, have you tried a modified Include statement for virtual hosts to map a directory? So instead of /etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf as indicated, one would use /etc/apache2/extra/vhosts/*.conf and then just create a default.conf for the first virtual host, and then add/edit/delete vhost files as needed. I think it would be easier to manage host files and changes.

By default, the Apache Virtual Host configuration on Mac OS X is located in a single file: /etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf. You need to edit the Apache configuration to include this file and enable virtual hosts.

Over the years, I have created many virtual hosts. Each time editing httpd-vhosts.conf. To mountaindogmedia's point, this becomes difficult to manage. Furthermore, Apache configurations often get reset when upgrading Mac OS X. In the same amount of steps (two), you can adopt a more manageable configuration.
