Please tell me it isn't really this difficult!!!

I've spent a very frustrating afternoon and still _CANNOT_ successfully
deploy my VdB 7.01 app with BDE 5.01.

To answer the obvious questions first:

Yes, I have consulted DEPLOY7.HOW. My list of files included for the
BDE disagrees from the list supplied there in two aspects - IDAPINST.DLL
is the one that I downloaded from the recommended site and has
yesterday's date on it (the one cited in the HOW is the date associated
with the 4.5 version. Version number for my copy of IDAPINST.DLL is
5.0.0.36. And the date on the IDAPI32.CNF file is newer.

To get the BDE files cited in the HOW, I had to install pack 2 of Delphi
4 (the original install of Delphi started this whole mess - I had
deployed a version of my program successfully before installing Delphi,
which updated BDE).

The computer being installed on is my notebook, which I have now
thoroughly scrubbed twice!!! today. I've uninstalled my previous
version of the program, VdB 7.01, ISE, Quattro Pro 8, and even an old
copy of Delphi 1.0 that was still there. I've used regedit (quaking
knees) and deleted the three keys mentioned in DEPLOY7. I've used
Win95's find to locate all files named IDAPI*.* and deleted them and the
directories they were located in. There should no longer be any
lingering stuff relating to BDE on this notebook. And rebooted a couple
of times in there, too.

Each time, when installing the disk set (which was recreated and copied
to fresh diskettes each time) - three installs in all this afternoon,
during the installation process, I got the following two messages:

STOP: The file IDAPI32.CNF could not be located in SUPPORTDIR.

STOP: Merging the Configuration File has failed. Config file:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland\BDE\IDAPI.CNF

Attempting to run BDEADMIN.EXE after each installation gets this error
message:

Exception EDBEngineError in module BDEADMIN.EXE at 00054FA2 An error
occurred while attempting to initialize the Borland Database Engine
(error $3E06)

Attempting to run my program results in three (3) instances of this
message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

The program mentioned in the title bar is VDB7RUN.

1. How can I get this combination to work?

2. Will I have to get rid of Delphi and wipe my development machine of
all references to BDE and reinstall VdB 7.01 just to get my client
working again? (Seems a bit drastic)

BDE 5.01 seems to run all right on my development machine. I just can't
deploy any finished (or semi-finished <g>) programs.

Thanks for listening this far and thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Marilyn,
I have gone through the same experience as you did. Despite the
helpfull advise given by this NG, I still could not deploy Vdb 7.01 with
BDE 5.01. However, the workaround is deploy it first with BDE 4.5x
and then with BDE 5.01. The later could be the upgrade alone or your
entire deployment set (i.e make two set of installation, one with
BDE 4.5x and the other with BDE 5.01). It seems *crazy* but the
time spent on figuring the problem seems more *crazy*. Hope it
help.

Yuck!

Thanks for the tips any way. I'll give that a try. Now, where did I
stick that cd......

Talking to myself again <g>.

Sorry, Steven, but this technique didn't work for me. However, I do now
have a set of diskettes with 4.5 that works that I can get to my user.
Unfortunately, I'll have to wipe BDE off his machine to install it :(

I made the two sets of distribution disks like you mentioned, then wiped
VdB 7.01 and the BDE off the notebook. All registry entries gone.

Installed the 4.5 set and tested the program. Installed and executed as
planned. No errors. No warnings. I was elated!!!

Then I installed the 5.01 set. Same two error messages during
installation and three gpfs when attempting to run the program.

I guess I'll just have to rebuild everything on the notebook before
deploying <ugh>. Back to 640x480! Fortunately, it's just for creating
the distribution set. For safety's sake, I also rebuild the .exe on the
notebook.

Well, I've got a working set of diskettes, but I sure hope Alan and
company can get this fixed ASAP

Did you try the InstallShield Express generated set with BDE 4.5 first and
then install BDE 5.01 *upgrade* (i.e. the downloaded upgrade file alone) ?

What it comes down to is, right, you can't. :)

Steven's advice does work, and is the only way I've found to have both VdB and
BCB (same for Delphi) apps deployed on the same machine. Gotta install BDE
4.5 first, then you can run the upgrade from the Web site.

I wish like crazy there was a better way, but I've not found it. FWIW, this
was a topic of some discussion at the '98 online meetings. The Inprise guys
seemed a bit surprised, themselves, by this glaring incompatiblity....

Huh? Sorry. I don't understand what you're saying here. (It may be
the allergies that have my head clogged up this morning....)

What "upgrade"?
I got 5.01 by installing Delphi 4.

Are you suggesting there's a file that can be downloaded that is
involved here?

Okay. I guess I didn't understand that from the original advice. So,
if I dig around on the Borland, er, uh, Inprise web site, I can find a
download file for BDE 5.01.

Then, the drill is to install the 4.5 version of my program on the
client location (after scrubbing the original install <groan>), then
apply the downloaded file.

Now, what about modifications I make from then on? Can I just copy a
new .exe file to his system? Or do I have to go back to some form of
installation?

Just the .EXE should be fine, unless you start using dBASE 2000 (which
obviously isn't available yet ... <G>)

The BDE folk? You gotta be kidding, right?

Yep, that's not too far off from what we heard last fall. In the meantime, a
VdB developer simply *must* keep a 4.5 installation for creating install
programs. Makes it a pain to deal with.
