Hi,

I have an old computer (Intel Celeron, 256 MB Ram) that
I do not use for Windows anymore. I also have a copy of
Kylix 3 that I got together with D7.

Will Kylix run on this hardware? If so, on what distrubution
of Linux is it easiest to install Kylix ?

I do not mind if it runs (a little) slow, I just want to try Linux
and Kylix.

Mission impossible ?

It愀 better to use Lazarus http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/

Plus it works on all distros, even very old ones. Also it is capable of
recompiling Delphi-VCL code (but not CLX).

Should be no problem. If you're looking around a little for some

Maybe this helps http://www.theo.ch/kylix/suse10.html

Thanks :) I know Lazarus from the Windows version. But I want
to try Kylix too.

Thank you for info :) I will try it as soon as I have
downloaded one of these distributions (probably
Mandriva).

Have you tried the Kylix 3 patches with SuSE 10.1 beta 6 or any 10.1
beta? If the patches work then I can see a distro switch in my future.

I am a little behind the original schedule :) If time permits I will try
installing Kylix 3 this weekend. Probably on Mandrive Linux. I will report
back my experience :)

I installed Linux and Mandriva today. I have practically no
prior experience with Linux. After installing the Kylix 3 CD
I patched it according to the guidlines at:

http://www.theo.ch/kylix/suse10.html

It took me half an hour. If I had known anything about Linux from earlier
it would have taken me 5 minutes.

And now it seems to work perfectly -- even the debugger !!

Kylix is alive :)

The IDE is fast enougth to run well on a 400Mhz computer with Windows 98.

Compile+Link is slower then with Delphi, but faster then most c compilers.

For me it´s reliable. In the worse case you just need to restart the IDE.

Hi Dag and everybody else!

Did it really take only half an our? Which part of Kylix are you using -
Delphi, or C++? Because I was "playing" with Kylix installation for over a
week without success! I even process according to
http://www.theo.ch/kylix/suse10.html as well... :-((((
My distro is Mandriva as well so I'm glad to hear that it is not impossible
to run Kylix on newest "Mandrake" distro....
I don't know where did I make a mistake, but on my pc, Kylix just don't want
to run...
Could you maybe send me an e-mail, how exactly have you patch your Kylix?
Did you do it after updating Mandriva or before? I'm asking cause my ATI
graphics card driver failed if I tried to install it after updating
Mandriva.
Which part of the website mentioned above if for C++ necessary? Does "In
your "~/startdelphi" script, before "<path to kylix>/bin/delphi..." add the
following lines: " mean to add it to the beggining of the file or where??? I
feel really lost... so any help will be appreciated.

Thanx.

Hi Gregy,

I only use the Delphi part, have not even tried the C++ version.

Are you only interested in the C++ part of Kylix, or will the getting the
Object Pascal version to work also be of interest ? I do not know anything
about the C++ version, but I could try to help you to get the Object Pascal
version to work.

If Borland would allow it I could create a WmWare image of Mandriva with
Kylix installed so that people could use it in WmWare player (free). You
could even use it in Windows. But Borland will most likely not allow this.
But if anyone bothers mailing Borland they could ask..

Borland could host the image on their website and only allow people with a
legal Kylix license to download.. Result: goodwill for Borland. Probability
of this happening: close to zero...

But who knows.. mail them and maybe the will realize that it makes sense.

Hi Dag.....

The Delphi part of Kylix is not necessary for me. I need the C++ part for my
diploma work.
I'm porting Windows application to Linux. I used Qt Designer and next task
is to do it in(or with?) Kylix.
