Transactions and Sweep Interval in Firebird?

Is there a way to find out the number of transactions a database is
processing on an hourly or daily basis. Firebird's default configuration is
to sweep the database every 20,000 transactions. The problem I am having is
that the clients are experiencing longer than usual log on periods during
different parts of the day. My theory is that the database is sweeping
during peak hours and causing some performance problems. I was thinking of
turing off sweeps then using gfix nighly around 3 AM in a batch file to
sweep the db. If anyone has any ideas please let me know..
